Ghizzone, Leonard named CU Athletes of the Week

This week's athlete of the week honors goes to Kennedy Leonard (women's basketball) and Andrew Ghizzone (men's track and field).
Kennedy Leonard scored a career-high 31 points and had seven assists as CU improved to 9-0 this season with a 74-56 win over Colorado State on Thursday. Leonard tied the school record with seven 3-point field goals and shot 9-of-17 from the floor overall in the game. She also had five rebounds and one steal. The Buffs have moved up to No. 15 in this week's AP Top 25.
Andrew Ghizzone recorded 5,405 points in the heptathlon last weekend at the CSM Alumni Classic & Multi, breaking an almost 17-year-old CU record in the process. The former record, 5.392 points, was established on February 26, 2000 by Drew Hildner at the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa.
Ghizzone finished the heptathlon third overall. During the course of the two-day event, he tied for eighth in the 60-meter dash (7.23), was third in the long jump (23-9.50/7.25m), placed eighth in the shot put (37-0.50/7.25m) and was eighth in the high jump (6-3.25/1.91m). On the second day, he was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.58), won the pole vault (15-1/4.60m) and also won the 1,000 (2:45.62).
Also nominated this week was Maja Wichhart-Donzo (women's track and field) and Derrick White (men's basketball).
Maja Wichhart-Donzo had a great start to her indoor season, finishing second overall in the pentathlon at the CMS Alumni Classic & Multi on Dec. 9, with a PR of 3,457. Wichhart-Donzo was first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.95), 11th in the high jump (5-1/1.55), eighth in the shot put (32.3.50/9.84m), third in the long jump (17-8.25/5.39m) and finished third in the 800-meter run (2:30.24). On the second day she placed fourth in the triple jump, leaping 38-8.25 (11.79m).
Derrick White was named Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance against Xavier and BYU. In the win against Xavier, White scored a game-high 23 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. He hit a team season-high nine field goals, including three from 3-point range. He scored a team-best 21 points on 7-of-12 from the field against BYU. He was 3-of-6 from the 3-point arc for the second straight game and hit all four of his free throw attempts.
