Thompson is the third Buffalo to garner All-America honors for the 10th-ranked Buffs
BOULDER – University of Colorado senior safety Tedric Thompson was named a second-team All-American on Tuesday by CBS Sports.
He becomes the third Buffalo this fall to garner All-America honors, joining OLB Jimmie Gilbert (third-team, Associated Press) and Kenneth Olugbode (second-team, Pro Football Focus). The CBS Sports All-America team is determined by votes from more than two dozen college football writers, analysts and experts from across CBS Sports and 247Sports.
Thompson led the nation in passes defended in 2016 with 25 (by CU's count which tracks defensive statistics off of coaches film). He had 18 pass breakups and his seven interceptions led the Pac-12 and tied for the third-most of any FBS player.
Those seven picks also tied the school record for most interceptions in a single-season (matching Dick Anderson in 1967, Cullen Bryant in 1972).
He drew first-team All-Pac-12 honors from the Associated Press and was a second-team selection of the league coaches. He was twice named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week during the season and was one of only two Pac-12 defenders to be picked twice; Stanford's Solomon Thomas was the other.
Thompson helped the CU secondary rank No. 3 in the country in pass efficiency defense at 98.12 while opposing quarterbacks completed just 48.3 percent of their passes on the Buffaloes and threw for only 182.5 yards per game, ranking CU as the 13th-best passing defense in the FBS.
He ranked second on the team in 2016 in snaps played on defense (854), was fourth with 75 tackles (47 solo, three for losses) and he was credited with 15 third-down stops and three quarterback pressures on the season.
Thompson leads the Buffs into the Dec. 29 Valero Alamo Bowl where CU will face No. 12/13 (CFP/AP) Oklahoma State. After playing in his final game in a Buffalo uniform, Thompson is set to participate in the 2017 East-West Shrine Game, having accepted an invitation to the Jan. 21 all-star game that will be televised by the NFL Network.
CBS Sports Network Tuesday night airs a special INSIDE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: 2016 ALL-AMERICA TEAM at 7 p.m. MT. Host Adam Zucker is joined by analysts Brian Jones, Aaron Taylor, Randy Cross, Houston Nutt, and CBS Sports senior college football writer Dennis Dodd to break down the team, providing insight on every player and position.
