A former Finnish national judo champion signs with CU looking to add to Buffalo pass rush

BOULDER – University of Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre announced late Thursday that outside linebacker/defensive end Chris Mulumba has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Buffaloes.
 
Mulumba will enroll at CU for the Spring 2017 semester and will have two years to complete his two remaining seasons of eligibility. He comes to the Buffs from the junior college ranks, where he last played at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif.
 
"Chris is an excellent defensive end and outside linebacker, is powerful and strong and has a very good first step on his pass rush," MacIntyre said. "We're excited about him being here at the University of Colorado playing defensive end for us."
 
Mulumba is originally from Helsinki, Finland, where he was a four-time Finnish national judo champion.

AT DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE: Played one seasons at Diablo Valley College in 2015 for coach Mike Darr; he signed with Central Florida after his sophomore season but did not qualify so he sat out the year and essentially took a redshirt season. As a sophomore in 2015 he led DVC with 63 tackles, had nine for losses and four sacks in 10 games. He was a first-team All-Bay 6 League selection that season when he was a teammate of Kyle Trego, who signed with CU and was a sophomore defensive back for the Buffs this past fall. He played his freshman season at Chabot Junior College in 2014 where he posted 35 tackles, four tackles for a loss and had one sack.
 
He will have two years to complete his two remaining seasons of eligibility.
 
PRE-COLLEGE IN FINLAND: Did not play football in high school, but he did wrestle and was a state champion in 2009. He is a four-time Finnish national judo champion in 2009-12 and he was a Scandinavian champion in 2010. Played for the Helsinki Roosters in 2012, which is a founding member of the American Football Association of Finland. He served his mandatory one-year of military service for the Finnish Army where he trained as a scout.
 
ACADEMICS: Interested in studying business management at Colorado
 
PERSONAL: He is the son of Annina and Etienne Mulumba. His father is a teaching assistant at a Finnish school and his mother is a nurse. He has two sisters, Audrey and Gloria, who both play basketball at Arizona Western College, and one younger brother, Etienne, Jr. He was born on Oct. 10, 1992 in Finland after his parents escaped violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His hobbies include watching movies and going on hikes and he is also fluent in French and Finnish.
