BOULDER – The postseason honors for the University of Colorado football program continue to roll in after a memorable 2016 season that saw CU win its first Pac-12 South Division title.
Tuesday head coach Mike MacIntyre was named as one of five finalists for the 2016 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) also named him as the 2016 Region 5 Coach of the Year as well as a finalist for its national coach of the year award.
Additionally, Colorado senior ILB Kenneth Olugbode was named a second-team All-American by Pro Football Focus.
Olugbode's 135 tackles (by CU's count, which tracks defensive statistics off of coaches film not press box stats that the NCAA utilizes) is the third-most of any FBS defender this season. He posted 10 or more tackles in seven games, including a high of 19 last Friday against No. 4 Washington in the Pac-12 Championship game.
The AFCA will announce the 2016 FBS and FCS National Coaches of the Year winners at the inaugural American Football Coaches Awards, televised on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. MT, during the 2017 AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
MacIntyre was joined by Ken Niumatalolo (U.S. Naval Academy), Nick Saban (Alabama), P.J. Fleck (Western Michigan) and Dana Holgorsen (West Virginia) as the finalists for the AFCA award.
Fleck, Saban, Penn State's James Franklin and Washington's Chris Peterson all joined MacIntyre as finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. That winner will be revealed on Dec. 15.
The official presentation reception for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award will be on Jan. 7, 2017, in Tampa, Fla., where the winning coach will be handed the FWAA/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year bust during a reception in conjunction with the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coach, announced its winner on Tuesday. Colorado defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt was one of five finalists up for that award, but Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was selected as the 2016 winner.
Venables was honored, along with his fellow finalists, at a Tuesday luncheon held at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Little Rock.
Colorado, sitting at 10-3 and ranked No. 10 in the final College Football Playoff Poll and No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25, is set to cap off the 2016 season on Dec. 29 in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Alamodome and will be televised by ESPN.
