Colorado-Utah Quotes
February 07, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe
General
"You have to give Utah a lot of credit, they did a good job of capitalizing on our mistakes in that fourth quarter. They really became the aggressors and we stopped doing what made us so successful in the other three quarters."
On What Changed In The Fourth Quarter
"I think it was more about what we stopped doing—we stopped doing what gave us that lead. We stopped controlling the tempo. We let all of their players do what they're most comfortable doing. We let their three-point players shoot threes. And we let their post players get a deep position. You can't give up 25 points in a quarter. We got ourselves out of what we were doing offensively that made us successful. One of the things that we were doing was running and pushing the ball in transition, and when you can't get stops you can't push the ball, so it's a bit of a double edged sword."
On Lauren Huggins' Return
"It was nice to have another guard that can come in. Obviously she does a nice job of hitting the open shot, and did a pretty good job of defending. I thought for her first game back, after missing a couple of weeks, she was a little bit better than I anticipated."
On Not Taking Advantage Of Utah's Turnovers
"I thought we missed an opportunity at the end of the second quarter to really increase that lead. Utah did a nice job of cutting that lead. We felt like with their point guard on the bench we need to utilize that better. We need to be able to extend that lead more than we did. I thought we did a nice job of getting deflections and turning them over. We've got to be consistent with that. The same thing happened the last time we played them; I thought we did a nice job of turning them over in the first half, but in the second half those turnovers dwindled quite a bit."

On Reaction To Letting Lead Slip Away
"It's pretty frustrating, but I think we played really hard the first few quarters. It's frustrating to see it slip away like that knowing you have it right there in front of you."
On Missing Out On Second-Chance Opportunities
"We didn't use our opportunities wisely, especially the second-chance opportunities."

On Controlling The Paint Against Utah's Two Post Players Emily Potter And Joeseta Fatuesi
"It was a different style of play for us. We're used to being on the body for most post players. Most post players don't like contact, whereas their post players love contact. It was different trying to stay off their bodies and making sure they couldn't feel us, so we could surprise them, get a tipped ball, or anything; just figuring out where to be and what to do at the right time. Other than that, it wasn't too difficult. We had some mental lapses and didn't get it done."
On Progress Of Utah's Joeseta Fatuesi
"She's been getting increasingly better throughout the years. I remember seeing her last year and thinking once she gets her footwork down she's going to be something. She's good. We needed to have better mental focus in the post."
Utah Head Coach Lynne Roberts
On Colorado's Play
"I think Colorado played really well. They outrebounded us -- 20 offensive rebounds -- and they played their guts out. They played to win, and I have a lot of respect for that. In the first half they took us out of what we're good at – in terms of transition they took that away from us, our starting post got into foul trouble early and that definitely hurt us offensively in the first half. I think we were a little tentative since Colorado was so aggressive. "
On The Second Half Surge
"In the second half we just stuck with it and did what we needed to do to win. In that fourth quarter big players made big plays. We executed down the stretch. We did a good job, [our bigs] got the looks we wanted to get and players weren't afraid to take shots. We hit big baskets in that fourth quarter and kind of took the wind out of their sails a little bit. "
On Physicality Of The Game
"It was really physical. Both teams were playing their tails off, and the officiating was unpredictable. In some plays the physicality was allowed, and other plays it wasn't, so it added challenges for both teams. It just speaks to how hard both teams were playing."
On The Utes' Mental Game
"I just kept saying, "we're fine, hang in there one play at a time". You can't think about outcome. You have to play the next play and be in the moment and let the game take care of itself."
