Women Golfers In Second At Bay Area Intercollegiate

FAIRFAX, Calif. – After three weather delays, the University of Colorado women's golf team did not let that slow them down on Monday as the Buffaloes fired a 296 and are one stroke out of first place here at the Bay Area Intercollegiate.

The tournament, originally slated for 54 holes was reduced to 36 due to the weather. Teams played their first 18 holes on Monday and will finish with the final round on Tuesday. Heavy rains fell in the Bay Area Sunday night into Monday, which pushed the tee-times back by 45 minutes and then rain on and off all day, resulted in multiple stops out on the course.

Colorado combined to record 13 birdies on the par 72, 6,112-yard Meadow Club and the Buffs' 296 or 8-over par scorecard is their fifth-best team round of the season. Oregon State leads the tournament, recording a 291 or 7-over par day and San Jose State is in third, one stroke behind the Buffs at plus-9. California is in fourth after carding an 11-over par performance and Washington rounds out the top five at 12-over par.

“The conditions were really rough today, but it is good experience,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “It wasn't a bad day, but wasn't a great day for us, so if we can clean up a few things for tomorrow, we'll be fine. It will be fun to be in that position—that's why the team works so hard is to give themselves a chance to win.”

Senior Alexis Keating is in prime position for medalist honors as she is tied for first place after posting a team-best 2-under par, 70. Keating was consistent throughout the day as she started with five straight pars and then moved to 1-under with a birdie on her sixth hole. Keating reeled off six more pars followed by her second birdie to get to 2-under. She closed the afternoon going birdie-bogey on her way to recording the only subpar round for the Buffs.

Sophomore Brittany Fan carded an even-par 72 and is tied for sixth place overall. She recorded four birdies, four bogeys and 10 pars. Fan got off to a strong start with a birdie right out of the gate on No. 6 and proceeded to shoot 2-under through 15 holes. The finish, however was challenging, as she bogeyed two of the final three holes to move to even-par.

Junior Esther Lee, the tournament's defending co-medalist is in at 2-over par, 74. Lee faced some ups and downs as her round went along. Lee had two bogeys through her first 11 holes, but was able to offset them with a pair of birdies to remain at even-par. She hit a rough patch on Nos. 16-17 with back-to-back bogeys, but was able to get one stroke back before heading to the front side with a birdie on No. 18. At 1-over par with four holes to play, she concluded the round with three pars and a bogey on her second to last hole, resulting in a 2-over par scorecard. Lee is tied for 13th place on the leaderboard.

Freshman Gillian Vance and junior Natalie Vivaldi both shot 80 or 8-over par. Vivaldi shot 6-over on the front nine and 2-over on the back, while Vance went 3-over on the front side and 5-over on the back. Vivaldi recorded a pair of birdies and despite Vance only birdying one hole, she finished strong with five straight pars. The pair is tied for 51st overall.

Senior Allie Zech is on the trip, playing as an individual. Her score will not count toward the team scoring. She carded a 77 or 5-over par and is tied for 32nd place. A rough start, bogeying four of her first five holes set her back to 4-over par. Two holes later she drained her first birdie to move to plus-3, but then had a double-bogey on the par 4, No. 6 and went to 5-over. She paired two bogeys with two birdies over the next six holes and rounded out the day with four consecutive pars.

Along with Keating at the top of the leaderboard is Erin Harper from Indiana as she also shot a 2-under par 70. California's Hannah Suh, Betty Chen from UC Davis and Regina De Guzman of San Jose State are tied for third place and one stroke back of first at 1-under par.

The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played on Tuesday, beginning at 10 a.m. MST. Colorado is set to play alongside Oregon State and San Jose State.
