Holland, Paul Named Athletes of the Week

April 12, 2016 | Men's Golf

This week's Athlete of Week honors go to Ana Holland (women's track and field)
and Jeremy Paul (men's golf). Holland broke CU's 26-year old 100-meter dash
record on Saturday at the Colorado Invitational, clocking in at 11.63. Paul turned in
a career-best performance with an 11-under par 205 (68-69-68) on the 7,334-yard,
par-72 Cattail Course at Whirlwind Golf Club layout.

Sophomore Holland's record-breaking time defeated the rest of the field by over half
a second as the runner-up earned a time of 12.15. Yolanda Johnson set the previous
100-meter dash record of 11.65, on April 14, 1990.

Holland was also a part of the 4x100 meter relay, which placed first with the second
best time in school history at 44.98, just missing the record of 44.95.

Paul shared medalist honors in leading Colorado to a team win at the Wyoming
Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz. He had the most birdies in the 109-man field with
16, which matched his own team-best in last fall's Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
The junior was under par collectively for the meet on all the par-3, par-4 and par-5
holes, and was the only player to shoot in the 60s all three rounds. He also had 34
pars, meaning just five holes worse than per, all of those single bogeys.

It was Paul's third career win, his second in major tournament action as he becomes
the 12th Buff to win at least two; the record is four. His 11-under par 205 effort ties
the third best performance in CU history, trailing 12-under scores by John Lindberg
in the 1989 BYU Cougar Classic and by current assistant coach Patrick Grady in the
2008 DU-Ron Moore Invitational. Scott Petersen, Derek Tolan and Beau Schoolcraft
also own 11-under scores. Paul's previous 54-hole best was a 9-under 209.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Paige Soenksen (lacrosse), Esther Lee (women's golf), and Brady Rutt (men's track and field).

Soenksen had a 6.00 goals-against average and a .538 save percentage to go with 12
ground balls in two games for Colorado. She made six saves and had seven ground
balls in a 9-8 loss to No. 7/6 Southern California on Friday. She rebounded with
eight saves and five ground balls in a 16-3 win over San Diego State on Sunday.

Lee earned two top 10 finishes last week. She finished in third place at the Silverado
Showdown in Napa, Calif. and then tied for ninth at the Arizona State Invitational in
Tempe, Ariz. to close out the weekend. In the Silverado, Lee posted a 73-72-68-213
or 3-under par final scorecard. At the ASU Invite, Lee carded a 69-76-73-218 or 2-
over par. After recording two more rounds in the 60s last week, she now has nine
for her career, which is the most ever recorded in program history. As a team, the
Buffs finished fourth at their own Silverado Showdown (co-hosted with Oregon) and
12th place at the ASU Invite.

Senior Rutt won the discus after earning a third place finish in the hammer throw at
the CU Invitational. His discus mark of 171-8 was a personal best and his mark in
the hammer throw is the second best of his career at 193-00.50.
