Edwards Adds Painton To 2016 Recruiting Class

April 14, 2016 | Men's Golf

BOULDER —University of Colorado men's golf coach Roy Edwards has added one more player to his 2016 recruiting class, as Spencer Painton, a sophomore transferring from the University of Kansas, has signed a financial aid agreement and will join the Buffaloes this fall.

Edwards recruited Painton when he was a high school performer at Regis Jesuit in Denver.  He will have two years of eligibility remaining once he enrolls on the CU-Boulder campus.

"We are excited to add Spencer to a strong incoming class," Edwards said.  "We were originally done with recruiting for next year but Spencer provides a unique opportunity for us to add a strong student, leader and player to the team.  He will fit in to the strong culture we have on the team and we expect him to compete right away."

Painton played in four events as a true freshman at Kansas during the 2014-15 season, owning a 74.09 stroke average for 11 rounds; he tied for 25th on two occasions as his top finishes.  Last fall, he competed in two tournaments, with a 76.0 average for six rounds.  His college low round was a 70 at the Louisiana Classics as a frosh.

He won the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Columbine Country Club last summer, turning in a 67-69—136 (8-under) scorecard.  He also tied for 47th overall in the 2015 Colorado Open, the ninth low amateur, with an even-par 71-69-76-72—288 effort.

In high school, he led Regis to the Colorado state 5A championship in 2012 and 2013, claiming medalist honors as a senior with a 66-72—138 score (6-under).  He tied for second as a junior with a 75-71—146 (4-over) performance.

He was the Colorado Junior Golf Association's Player of the year for 2013 for his efforts both in summer junior play as well as for his high school accomplishments.  That summer, he also claimed wins in the CJGA Tournament of Champions and in the CJGA Collegiate Invitational and qualified to play in the U.S. Junior Amateur Match Play.  He was named to the All-Colorado golf team for both 2012 and 2013.

Painton completes CU's 2016 recruiting class, as he joins four others who signed letters-of-intent last November: Californians Haoyuan "Jack" Li and Scott Mitchell, as well as two Europeans with ties to Denmark where current CU senior Philip Juel-Berg hails from, Victor Bjorlow and Morton Toft Hansen.
