Run With The Buffs: CU Has Own Bolder Boulder Wave

May 25, 2016 | General, Neill Woelk

BOULDER — Love the Buffs? Love the Bolder Boulder? The perfect Bolder wave exists for you: the CU Black and Gold Wave.

When an estimated 50,000-plus folks line up Monday morning for the 38th running of the iconic 10K, there will be a wave dedicated especially to those who have an affinity for CU and the Buffs. A number of Colorado coaches and administrators will run in the wave, including athletic director Rick George, senior associate A.D. Ceal Barry, associate A.D. Lance Carl, football coach Mike MacIntyre, basketball coach Tad Boyle, tennis coach Nicole Kenneally and lacrosse coach Ann Elliott..

Also, KOA radio sports director Mark Johnson, the “Voice of the Buffs,” will serve as the official starter this year.

“We obviously have a strong connection to the Bolder Boulder,” said CU associate athletic director Matt Biggers. “It's an event that is a major part of the community fabric, and we've enjoyed the opportunity to play a role in the event for all these years. A wave in the race is just another way that we can connect with something that's such a big part of Boulder and Colorado.”

The race finishes in Folsom Field, where a full house is usually on hand to greet runners as they enter the stadium. The event also includes a Memorial Day celebration, just one of the many reasons the race earned designation as “America's Best All-Time 10K” by Runner's World magazine.

CU has always had a strong connection to the Bolder Boulder. Along with the race finishing in Folsom Field, a number of former Buffs have fared well in the race over the years, including a pair of past champions: Mark Scrutton on the men's side in 1983 and Sara Slattery in the women's elite race in 2006. Slattery, a two-time NCAA champion for the Buffs, will be returning this year with Team USA on the 10th anniversary of her win.

With visitors from throughout the nation visiting for the race — the Bolder has entrants from all 50 states on a regular basis — the event is also an opportunity for CU officials to showcase the campus. This year, that will include an up-close look at the recently completed Champions Center, CU's world-class athletic facility.

“We always enjoy the opportunity to show off our beautiful campus and great facilities,” Biggers said. “It's a chance for runners and their families and friends to get a look at one of the most beautiful college campuses in America.”

Registration for the race is still open, and entrants can specifically request the CU wave.
