CU Releases 2016-17 Men's Golf Schedule

BOULDER — The University of Colorado and men's head golf coach Roy Edwards announced the team's 2016-17 schedule Wednesday, and many familiar annual tournaments once again appear on the slate.
The Buffaloes will host two tournaments this season, the first being the 7th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational at their home course, Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, on Sept. 26-27.
Colorado will then host its first conference championship meet since 1972, when the Pac-12 Conference Championships are set for April 28-30. The 72-hole event (36 holes the first day, 18 the next two) will take place at Boulder Country Club, site of the last time the Buffs hosted the '72 Big 8 Championship.
This will be just the fifth league title meet CU will host since joining the Big 7 in 1948, as Colorado also was home to the 1954, 1961 and 1968 tournaments; Colorado's last title, in fact, was in the latter, when the Buffs upended perennial Big 8 champion Oklahoma State at what is now Lake Valley Golf Club.
“We're real excited about our overall schedule, as it's incredibly competitive once again,” Edwards said. “The opportunity to host the Pac-12 Championship at home is unique and exciting. It will be fun, not only for our team, but to showcase the entire Pac-12 in our own backyard.”
The Buffaloes, who were No. 62 in the final 2016 rankings, will open the season on Sept. 6 in the Ballyneal Challenge in a three-way competition with Northern Colorado and Wyoming in Holyoke. In addition to the Simpson, CU will play in three familiar fall events, the Air Force Falcon Invitational (Sept. 10-11), the New Mexico Tucker Invitational (Sept. 23-24) and UCLA's Gifford Intercollegiate (Nov. 7-9), the last two days of which will feature match play. CU will also play in a new event, the Paintbrush Invitational (Oct. 10-11), with UNC and Denver serving as co-hosts, at Colorado Golf Club in Parker.
Colorado will open its spring season for the 12th straight year on Hawaii's Big Island in the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 2-4); that follows an Alumni Match in Scottsdale in January. The four remaining meets ahead of the Pac-12's are all past regulars on the schedule, Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 17-19), Oregon's Bandon Dunes Championship (March 12-14), Stanford's “The Goodwin” (Mar. 30-Apr. 1) and The Maxwell, co-hosted by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (Apr. 15-16).
The NCAA regionals are set for May 15-17 at six different sites: Auburn, Wash.; Austin; Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Stanford and West Lafayette, Ind. The NCAA Championship Finals will be May 26-31 in Sugar Grove, Ill., outside of Chicago with Northern Illinois the host school.
