Buffs video specialists continue to set standard

BOULDER — Another year, another Emmy Award for CU Sports Video.

The hits — literally — just keep coming.

If you are keeping score at home, that's three straight years with at least one Emmy for the department headed by Jamie Guy and John Snelson. The latest, picked up over the weekend at the Heartland Chapter awards ceremony, comes for last football season's production "Forward," following in the footsteps of "Season" and "Forever."

Next up: "The Rise," a series that will chronicle the 2016 Buffaloes' season.

Guy has been with CU for 15 years. When he started — his first season was 2001, when Gary Barnett's Buffs won the Big 12 Championship game — awards weren't even on his radar. But as the department has evolved, they've become part of the landscape, to the point that CU's video production is now nationally recognized as an industry leader.

"We've just always wanted to create awesome videos and have amazing cinematography," Guy said. "And that's really all we want to do still — make great videos that help us share what Colorado is all about. Everything that comes after that is icing on the cake. We love to win awards, it's awesome, but that's never been our number one goal."

Guy is listed as the producer/director/colorist on "Forward" while Snelson was the director/producer/editor. Also sharing the award for best Sports Program Series were Lucas Flores (producer/cinematographer), Grayson Simon (producer), Matthew Sisneros (cinematographer) and Tucker Brumley (cinematographer).

Flores, meanwhile, picked up a second Emmy in the Graphic Arts-Program category for his work with CU video animation.

Snelson said CU's videos have "always been about our team. It's never been about gaining notoriety outside. But we do like to think we are well-acquainted with how to make something people will want to watch."

Now, the CU Sports Video team is already deeply involved in producing "The Rise."

"The coaching staff has been really heavy recently on social media, and TheRise has been a big part of their recruiting," Snelson said. "We figured that would be a fitting title for this season's series."

While The Rise will be similar to previous seasons' series, Guy said there will — as always — be some new wrinkles.

"We're going to try some different techniques and styles," Guy said. "We'll offer some behind-the-scenes things that people wouldn't get to see anywhere else, and some of it I think will develop as we go along and explore some new techniques."

The first episode of The Rise will likely be released at the end of fall camp and just before the Sept. 2 season opener vs. Colorado State in Denver. After that, they will release episodes as the season unfolds.

"I think it will be similar formatting (to last year) in the sense that we will have probably have around six episodes and seven if we go to a bowl," Snelson said. "It will also depend on what happens. Say, if there's a big win against Michigan, obviously that will warrant its own episode."
