Golfers Tied For Lead At Air Force Invite

Yannik Paul, Ethan Freeman Tied For Fifth

USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team is tied for the lead after two rounds of the 48th Annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational.

The Buffaloes and Texas-El Paso both recorded 3-under team scores of 573, with Nevada-Las Vegas third at 579 and Colorado State fourth at 588.  The remainder of the 15-team field is well down the line heading into the final round.

Cool-to-chilly conditions and southeasterly winds made the Eisenhower Blue Golf Course extra challenging Saturday.

Senior Ethan Freeman and junior Yannik Paul are leading the Buffaloes here on the 7,461-yard, par-72 Eisenhower layout as both are tied for fifth at 2-under 142.  Paul tied a school record in his morning round, as he recorded two eagles on his way to a 70.

Two other Buffs are tied for ninth, junior John Souza and freshman Morten Toft Hansen, both with identical 74-70—144 even par scorecards.  Sophomore Spencer Painton is 13th (71-74—145), with seniors Jeremy Paul tied for 41st (74-78—152) and Ryan Schmitz tied for 73rd (81-77—158).  Souza and Schmitz are playing here as individuals, and thus their scores don't count toward the team total.

"We had a good first round as a team in some tough conditions," said CU head coach Roy Edwards.  "The finish to the second round was a bit of a different story, where we struggled with our games a bit.  It was a very tough day condition and course wise and I thought we did an excellent job competing for the most part.

"We are very well-rounded as a team and Morten and Spencer did a nice job finishing off their second rounds helping a bunch from the 4 and 5 positions," he added.  "John, Ethan, Yannik, Morten, and Spencer are all in a great position for good finishes tomorrow.  I expect Jeremy and Ryan to come out and play with a great deal of confidence to move up the leaderboard."

Jeremy Paul, CU's all-time stroke average leader, in particular might come out with a vengeance after recording his third highest score as a collegian in Saturday's second round.

UNLV's John Oda and UTEP's Andreas Sorenson are tied for the lead at 7-under 137.

The final round is set for a 7:30 a.m. Sunday start off both the Nos. 1 and 10 tees; Colorado is paired with the other three schools in the top four and commences play at 8:24.
