Bruder, Freeman Named Athletes of the Week
September 14, 2016 | General
This week's Athlete of the Week honors go to Emily Bruder (soccer) along with Ethan Freeman, Sr. (men's golf). Bruder and the women's soccer team is on a roll as of late; now on a three-game win streak and outscoring its opponents 12-2 in the process. Freeman is coming off a successful weekend as he led the Buffaloes to a third place team finish. Freeman finished in fifth place individually with a 69-73-72—214 scorecard on the 7,461-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course layout.
The dominating margin by the women's soccer team has a lot to do with the outstanding effort of Bruder. The senior forward scored her first two goals as a Buffalo; one in which was a game winner against Iowa on Sunday afternoon. Colorado snapped Iowa's six-game win streak to extend their season record to 5-3. With an assist coming in Colorado's victory on Saturday over Hawaii, Bruder tallied up a total of five points over the last two matches.
In finishing at 2-under par for the tournament, Freeman became the first player in school history to finish under par four times in the same tournament. As a freshman in 2013, he was 1-under, which he matched his sophomore year, and was 4-under last September. He has finished 10th, 16th, and fifth twice in his four tries here. Freeman led the entire field in par-5 scoring, playing the dozen combined at 8-under for the weekend. Freeman's 14 birdies led the team and tied for the third most of the 92 competitors he faced.
Also nominated for this week's honors: Naghede Abu (volleyball) and Sefo Liufau (football).
Sophomore middle blocker Abu led the No. 18 Buffs to a 1-1 weekend. In the loss to No. 15 San Diego, Abu recorded six kills and only one error to hit .455, while posting six blocks. Abu played a big part the Buffs the following afternoon as Colorado defeated UC Irvine 3-0. Six was the lucky number as she recorded another six kills on 10 errorless attacks, hitting .600 along with another six blocks at the net. Over the weekend, Abu averaged a team-leading 2.00 blocks per set, and added 2.00 kills and 3.17 points per set.
In less than two quarters of action in CU's 56-7 win over Idaho State, quarterback Liufau completed 15-of-18 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns. That stat-line was efficient enough to give him a personal best 215.2 single-game rating. Liufau also did it on the ground; rushing for 54 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.
