Freshman Hansen Ties Frosh Scoring Mark
ERIE — The University of Colorado men's golf team started slow but ended hot here Monday as the Buffaloes are in the lead after two rounds of their own 7th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational.
The Buffaloes utilized a 12-under par 276 team score in the second round to vault into a five-stroke lead, as CU owns a team total of 558 (18-under) with one round left to play. Utah, the first round leader, is in second place with a 563 total (13-under), with Campbell, Houston Baptist and Wyoming all tied for third at 11-under 565.
The Rocky Mountain state schools owned the leaderboard after the first round with Utah (277, 11-under), Wyoming (280) and Colorado (282) in the top three spots after 18 holes on a day where the weather and conditions couldn't be more perfect (sunshine, no cloud cover and temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s).
Colorado got off to a pedestrian start, sitting at 1-over through 10 holes for those who scored in the morning and with the team in 10th place, but the Buffs would catch fire and finish out the day from that point on at 19-under par and zooming into the lead heading into the final 18 holes.
Freshman Morten Toft Hansen, who finished strong with a sixth-place finish on Saturday in New Mexico's Tucker Invitational, picked up right where he left off. He opened with a 1-under 71 and then went out and fired a 7-under 65 in the afternoon on the 7,745-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club course layout. His 8-under 136 total has him in the individual lead, one stroke up on Air Force's Sunwoo Choi and Houston Baptist's Val Almendarez.
He tied CU's freshman record the low 18 hole score with the 65, joining the two teammates who set the mark as frosh during the 2013-14 season. Jeremy Paul first did it in the UTEP Give 'Em Five Invitational on Oct. 25 (also 7-under with nines of 32-33) and Ethan Freeman matched it in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 7 (5-under, 33-32). Hansen's nines were also 32-33 and he had seven birdies and 11 pars in CU's first bogey-free round recorded this fall. He had 10 birdies on the day, tying him for fourth in the 108-man field, and he led all in par-4 scoring, playing the 20 of them at 7-under.
Freeman, now a senior, is tied for fourth, just two back of Hansen after recording a pair of 69s for a 6-under 138 scorecard; he had a very steady day, also scoring 10 birdies with 22 pars and just four bogeys. Junior John Souza, playing for CU's Silver (or B) team), is also in the hunt for medalist honors, with a 70-69—139 effort (5-under); he scored Colorado's only eagle Monday (there were just 11 total), and had seven birdies and 24 pars with just four bogeys.
Junior Yannik Paul, CU's stroke average leader (71.4), is tied for 23rd as he opened with a 74 but rallied with a 68 in the afternoon to close 36 holes with a 2-under 142. He had seven birdies and 24 pars countered by just five bogeys. His twin brother, Jeremy opened strong with a 3-under 69, but shot a 76 in the afternoon for a 1-over 145 score, tying him for 47th; he had good reason for running a bit out of energy, as he arrived back home at 1:30 a.m. Monday morning after playing 72 holes for his native Germany in the World Amateur Team Championships in Cancun, Mexico.
Junior Spencer Painton rounded out CU's first-team contingent with a 73-74—147 score, with four birdies, 25 pars and seven bogeys as he is tied for 60th. The entire first unit that is officially scoring against the other teams here saw nine of its 10 rounds played and just two holes out of 180 with no scores worse than a bogey.
Of the other players competing on CU's Silver team, sophomore Wilson Belk (73-72—145, tie-47th), senior Ryan Schmitz (73-73—146, tied for 54th) and freshman Victor Bjorlow (74-73—147, tied for 60th) are all within three strokes of par. Belk had the third-most birdies Monday by a Buff (nine), but was undone by 10 bogeys.
Junior Kade Crossland (71-83—154, tied for 94th) opened strong with three birdies and 13 pars with just two bogeys before struggling in the afternoon. Freshman Jack Li, who injured his wrist last week, made a go of it and shot an 81 in the morning but wound up withdrawing.
"As a team we got off to a slow start in round one," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "But we came back strong and had a good finish to that round and then had a really nice afternoon, highlighted by Morten, Ethan and Yannik. Spencer and Jeremy were uncharacteristically off their games, and that's abnormal for them. John had a really nice day as well and he's also in great position going into the final round.
"Morten was in full control, really a continuation of his final round (Saturday) in New Mexico," Edwards added. "He was very well prepared and patient all day. He executed his plan very well, and anytime you tie a scoring record, it's a good accomplishment. Ethan has been playing really well and it's been great to see him get off to such a good start in his senior season."
The third and final round is slated for 8:15 a.m. staggered shotgun start, with the exception of the top four teams that will all tee off between 7:55 and 8:35 on No. 1.
