Lindsay and Smith Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
January 03, 2017 | Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Haley Smith (women's basketball) opened Pac-12 conference play by winning this week's athlete of the week while Colorado tailback Phillip Lindsay (football) closed the 2016 football season by earning honors as well.
The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team is coming off a tough California road-trip against Southern California and 10th ranked UCLA. In the team's Pac-12 opener against USC, senior Haley Smith got it done on the defensive end by adding a team-high nine rebounds along with forcing three steals. The high point for the Buffs this weekend came from a career-high 31 points scored by Smith in a tough 87-74 loss against UCLA. 15 of those points came from her 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range while she also shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. With another 6 rebounds in this contest, she recorded a total of 15 rebounds over the two games.
In the Buffs highly-anticipated appearance in the 2016 Alamo Bowl, Phillip Lindsay rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries. He caught six passes for a total of 103 yards. He is the first running back in Colorado history to have two 100-yard receiving games in his career. Lindsay's first came earlier this season when he caught six passes for 105 yards against Southern California. His Alamo Bowl performance was just the sixth game a running back has reached the century mark in receiving yards in school history. His 103 yards is the third most receiving yards by a Buff in a single bowl game. He became the second Colorado back to lead the team in receiving yards during a bowl game - also the second to lead in both rushing and receiving yards.
Also nominated for this week's honors: Derrick White (men's basketball).
White had a team-high 15 points and 8 assists in Colorado's Pac-12 Conference opener against Utah. He hit 50 percent from the field (6-of-12) including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. White led Colorado in scoring for the seventh time this season. He has made 13 of 27 from 3-point range over the last six contests (.481) and has made three 3-pointers in four of the last six games.
