October 17, 2017 | Football, Tennis
Bryce Bobo (football) and Linda Huang (tennis) have been named the UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances last week (10/9-10/15).
Senior wide receiver Bryce Bobo shined in Saturday's 36-33 win over Oregon State. He hauled in a pair of touchdown catches and racked up a career-high 126 receiving yards on nine receptions. Bobo registered the second passing touchdown of his career just before halftime, when he took the ball on a reverse and found quarterback Steven Montez in the end zone for an 11-yard score. He proved to be the difference fourth quarter, as his touchdown grab put CU on top 29-26 with 8:53 to play. Then with just 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, Montez connected with Bobo again for the game-winning score.
Freshman Linda Huang made a statement in her first ITA Regional tournament, defeating five opponents on her way to the event's championship. She advanced through her side of the bracket that included 63 other players before eventually falling to No. 2 seed Marinna Petre from Idaho in the final. Her quarterfinal match against Nevada's Claudia Herrero was a two hour and 45 minute marathon, but the freshman prevailed 7-6, 5-7, 6-2. In the semifinal, Huang met the tournament's top seed Julia O'Laughlin from DU. She battled to another three-set victory, winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
Also nominated for this week's honors: Joe Klecker (men's cross country), Dani Jones (women's cross country), Alexa Smith (volleyball), and Kirsty Hodgkins (women's golf).
Sophomore Joe Klecker helped the Buffs to a runner-up finish at Saturday's NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky. Klecker placed ninth in the 8-kilometer race (23:20.9), improving on his 24th place finish at last year's Pre-Nationals.
Junior Dani Jones led the women's team to a second place finish at NCAA Pre-Nationals, too. Jones raced to a third place finish in the 5k (19:33.7), crossing the finish line just five second behind the winner.
Junior outside hitter Alexa Smith guided the Buffs to a road sweep of Arizona and Arizona State, CU's road sweep first in two years. In Friday's 3-0 victory over Arizona State, Smith tallied seven kills and 12 digs in addition to three blocks. Then, in a 3-2 win against Arizona, Smith tied a career-high with 25 kills and hit .339 with only four errors on 62 attacks.
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins had another standout performance at this week's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite. She shot a field low 69 on the final day to move up five spots and finish second overall. Hodgkins finished with a 1-under scorecard of 71-75-69—215 and helped her team finish second overall at 9-over par 873.
