Buffs Tie School Record In 1-0 Win At Oregon State
October 26, 2017 | Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Marty Puketapu scored early in the second half as Colorado earned a 1-0 win at Oregon State on Thursday afternoon with their school-record 12th shutout of the season. The Buffs have now picked up seven points in their past three matches and are 9-5-4 overall and 3-4-2 in the Pac-12. OSU dropped to 4-10-3 and 1-7-1.
The Buffs also had 12 clean sheets in 2004 and 2014 and have two regular-season matches remaining this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: OSU outshot CU 9-2 in the first half, but the scoring chances were even as the Beavers put just two of those on frame, which were both saved by Jalen Tompkins. Seven of OSU's shots came in the first 13 minutes of the match as the Buffs quickly settled in.
Puketapu scored less than seven minutes into the second half in the 52nd minute. Becca Rasmussen had a great effort to set up the play, dribbling across the top of the box, dribbling through two defenders, and then slotting the ball to Puketapu in front of the goal.
CU continued to pressure for much of the second half and held the Beavers to just one shot on goal in the second half. Taylor Kornieck had a chance late that was deflected just wide of the goal by a defender.
KEY STATISTICS: Tompkins finished with three saves in the match and picked up her seventh solo shutout of the season. She has also shared the shutout in CU's five other clean sheets. The Buffs were outshot 14-8 overall, but outshot OSU 6-5 in the second half.
NOTES: Puketapu's goal moves her into a tie for second in the Pac-12 among freshman goal scorers with eight this season ... she also moved into a tie for fourth place all-time among CU freshmen ... Puketapu also has three goals in her past three matches and four overall in Pac-12 play ... Tompkins now has a shutout streak of 318:05, the longest for a CU goalkeeper in conference play since the Buffs joined the Pac-12 in 2011 (longest in conference play since Kara Linder had a shutout streak of 322:32 in the Big 12 from 2008-09) ... CU tied the school record for shutouts in a season with its 12th this year (also had 12 in 2004 and 2014)
UP NEXT: CU's road trip continues on Sunday when the Buffs play at Oregon. Kickoff is set for noon MT in Eugene.

On the match
"I thought we came out slow and Oregon State came out with a lot of energy and put us under a lot of pressure early. After the first 15 minutes, I thought we started to settle down and play much better. As far as the goal, just really a great individual effort from Becca. She picked the ball up wide, beat a player on the dribble, cut inside and beat another player. And then she slipped a great ball to Marty to tuck it away. After that, we defended very well and gave up just a couple of half chances. But really, the back four and JJ did a good job to get the shutout."
On what changed momentum-wise after the first 15 minutes
"You go on the road in the Pac-12, it's tough. And you're playing a team that's had some really good results at home and they came out with a lot of confidence and we were on our heels. After that, I just thought we settled down. We made some small adjustments and I thought the players that came off the bench did a really good job of changing the tempo and settling us down. Second half, we played very well. We scored a good goal and were maybe unlucky not to get another one. At the end of the day, on the road, a 1-0 shutout in the Pac-12, you'll take that any day."
On other scoring chances late in the match
"We got the ball in dangerous spots, but we just didn't quite have that final piece. But also, we weren't pushing a lot of numbers [forward] in the last 15 minutes. We were really defending and I thought the back four were fantastic. I thought Nancy Best, when she came in, she really settled things down. Megan [Massey], Sarah [Kinzner] and Taylor [Kornieck] were really good two-way players. They were getting forward, but they were also defending. It was a really good team effort."
On facing Oregon on Sunday
"They're a good team. The results haven't gone their way often this year, but at their place on a Sunday, we really have to focus on our recovery. We're excited to get out tomorrow to support both cross country teams at the Pac-12 Championships and then volleyball tomorrow night, so it'll be all about the Buffs tomorrow, but it'll also be all about us as far as rest and recovery. We're getting ready for a team that once again is going to be similar to [today's opponent]. We have to be tight defensively and we have to be opportunistic as we go forward."
