Thomas: Lindsay's Record-Breaking Performance Doesn't Matter To Him Without The W

October 07, 2017 | Football

BOULDER— After Colorado's 45-42 loss Saturday night to Arizona, a night on which running back Phillip Lindsay became the Buffs' all-time leader in all-purpose yards, the senior team captain wanted nothing to do with his accolades.

"I'd rather not talk about that right now," Lindsay said. "At the end of the day we didn't get the win. That's what we wanted. We're going to back to square one and get stuff rolling again. I'm proud of my teammates."

Lindsay ended the night with 320 yards — 281 rushing and 39 receiving — to boost his career total to 4,989. That lifted him past Rodney Stewart's total of 4,828, a record Stewart had held since 2011.

Lindsay's accomplishments didn't stop there, though.  Along with moving to the top of the record book in all-purpose yards, Lindsay established career highs in rushing attempts (41) and yards (281), and tied his career high in touchdowns (3). His 41 attempts is a CU record, breaking a 40-year-old record set by James Mayberry (40-170) in 1977, and his 281 yards is the fourth-highest mark on the books.

Saturday's game against Arizona was also Lindsay's ninth career 100-yard game.

But for Lindsay, all the numbers in the world don't matter if they don't come with a win.

"I do it for my team, period," Lindsay said. "I'm going to do whatever I have to do to get the win. We came up short so obviously, I didn't do enough."

Although Colorado suffered its third loss in conference play, Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre praised his running back after the game.

"It's awesome," MacIntyre said. "For what Phillip has done for our program, for the University of Colorado, the way he represents the University of Colorado, the way he represents the state of Colorado, for him to do that, go down in the history books forever.

"It will be hard to break that all-purpose yards (record), it stood for a long time and he's got at least seven more games," MacIntyre continued. "I'm really happy for Phillip and how he battled and how he fought. He was the first one talking to the team after the game in the locker room about what we need to do and how we need to do it."

More records are likely in the future for Lindsay. He needs just 131 receiving yards to become CU's first player to have 1,000 career yards rushing and receiving.

Lindsay and the Buffs aren't worried about numbers, though. The only thing they want to see is a win.

"We're going to be OK at the end of the day," Lindsay said at the post-game press conference. "Whether you guys, believe it or not, we don't care."
