No. 2 Stanford Too Much For Buffs
October 08, 2017 | Soccer
BOULDER – Colorado suffered its second consecutive loss on Sunday, falling 3-0 to No. 2 Stanford at Prentup Field. The Buffs slipped to 7-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the Pac-12, while the Cardinal improved to 12-1-0 and 5-0-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cardinal held the run of play most of the first half and capitalized in the 32nd minute when Civana Kuhlmann scored from inside the box after a cross from Jaye Boissiere.
That goal came just five minutes after Jalen Tompkins stopped a flurry of Stanford shots, making three saves in less than a minute. The first was a diving stop to her left to punch a way a rocket from inside the box by Michelle Xiao. She then caught a header seconds later on a second shot in the sequence. After a goalkick, Stanford controlled the ball and put a third shot on goal that Tompkins again caught.
The Cardinal had a goal called back for offsides in the 46th minute right after halftime.
In the 57th minute Xiao got a goal of her own, working her way into the box from the left side, and ripping a shot to the far post to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead.
Kuhlmann scored her second of the day in the 74th minute, heading in a long service from Kiki Pickett.
KEY STATISTICS: Stanford outshot CU 26-4 in the match, including 14-2 in the first half. Tompkins played the first 66 minutes and made five saves, while allowing two goals. Taylor Kornieck had CU's only shot on goal and Megan Massey had two shot attempts, but neither was on goal.
NOTES: CU dropped to 0-8 all-time against Stanford ... the Buffs have played three nationally-ranked teams in the past five matches and are 0-3 in those matches (1-0-1 vs. non-ranked teams during that stretch).
UP NEXT: CU hits the road to play at No. 6 Southern California on Friday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MT in Los Angeles.
POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On what makes Stanford so impressive
"They're just really good. They have quality everywhere. If you're looking for chinks in the armor you're searching far and wide. They showed up more dynamic in the attack, which every coach in the country will say. They played well today. Having said that, I think we played well. If you look at their three goals, I don't think we really made any mistakes in the back. I thought we were competitive, I thought they bought into the tactics. It was always going to be a challenge getting things going on the front end. But big picture, we did about as much as we could do today. We just have to move on and get ready for the next one on Friday."
On being shut out in four of the last five games
"Goals would help the cause. But we knew through our stretch that goals were going to be a premium and that's not going to change next Friday. If you look around the conference, goals are a premium everywhere. We look at every game as a fresh opportunity so it's not like we're pressing more or doing anything different. Our personnel is the personnel at this point. We just need a little bit more quality going forward. Today was going to be a tough day for that."
On Stanford's defense and chances throughout the game
"They play exactly the same against everybody. Tactically, they don't need to change for anybody. We did some things different first stretch, I'm okay with it. The second goal was big. We needed to run to get the game stretched a little bit. But having said that, If we're going to look for positives our second corner kick wasn't until there was a minute left in the game. I thought we shut down their wide play really well. We didn't do enough going forward. But, when you're chasing the ball that much it's tough to expect a turnaround, playing front foot is a little bit easier. "
On if Sarah Kinzner will play more next game
"Yeah, that was kind of the plan, was to get her some confidence and to get her some minutes. Now she has a whole week to get ready for USC. We're hoping (she will play more), right now it's kind of a pain tolerance thing. This will be an important week for her, we're hoping she comes back because obviously she is an important piece of what we do."
On change in the lineup
"We were looking to try and neutralize (Stanford's) wing play, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that, until the end. On the third goal, that was the first time that the outside back crossed and got a goal, because we had changed our tactics at that point because we were trying to chase a goal. There was a lot of running up and back, which is something that we might look into in the future, but I thought that we did OK.
