Four Buffs Earn All-Region Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Four Colorado women's soccer players were named to the All-West Region teams on Wednesday by the United Soccer Coaches. Taylor Kornieck was selected to the first team, Joss Orejel was named to the second team, and Jalen Tompkins and Becca Rasmussen were both on the third team. It is tied for the most all-region players CU has had from the coaches association in school history, matching the total from 2005.
Kornieck, a sophomore midfielder from Henderson, Nev., had seven goals and four assists, tying Marty Puketapu for a team-best 18 points this season. Kornieck also had 92 shot attempts, just one off the single-season school record. Her four game-winning goals ranked fourth in the Pac-12 and 55th nationally, while she started all 22 matches.
In two seasons at CU, Kornieck has twice been named All-Pac-12 and was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2016. She already ranks seventh in CU history with 18 career goals and 44 career points, with her goals per game average of 0.41 being the second-best ever.
Orejel, a senior fullback from Tustin, Calif., had one goal and five assists for seven points, starting 21 matches. She scored her goal against Denver and also had two assists in that match for a career-high four points. Her defense helped the Buffs break the school record for goals-against average (0.61) and clean sheets (14).
Orejel wrapped up her CU career ranking tied for fifth in career assists with 14, the most ever for a defender. She also started 57 matches and had 69 appearances.
Tompkins, a sophomore goalkeeper from Phoenix, had a 0.58 goals-against average, .882 save percentage, and nine solo shutouts, while starting all 22 matches. She broke the CU single-season individual records for save percentage and GAA. Her save percentage led the Pac-12 and was 11th nationally, and her GAA was third in the conference and 18th nationally.
In two seasons at CU, Tompkins currently holds the best GAA (0.71) and save percentage (.867), and her 25 wins ranked fourth, while her 182 saves are sixth. She was named third-team All-Pac-12 this season.
Rasmussen, a senior striker/midfielder from Golden, Colo., had seven assists and started 17 matches. Her seven assists led the team and were the third-highest total in CU single-season history. She ranked seventh in the Pac-12 in total assists and two of her helpers came on game-winning goals.
This was Rasmussen's only season with the Buffs after transferring from Georgia following her junior season. She was a third-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2017 and is currently training for the upcoming 2018 NWSL Draft.
The four players led CU to a 12-6-4 record this season, including 5-4-2 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Buffs reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before being eliminated by No. 2-ranked North Carolina.
The 2017 season will wrap up this coming weekend as just four teams are left in the NCAA Tournament, including Pac-12 schools Stanford and UCLA.
