Stefanou And Tompkins Earn UCHealth CU Athlete Of The Week Honors

November 08, 2017 | Football, General, Soccer

BOULDER - This week's UCHealth CU Athlete of the week goes to placekicker James Stefanou for football, and Jalen Tompkins for women's soccer.

First to win the award is freshman Buff James Stefanou. The Lou Groza Award semifinalist is now 31-of-31 on extra points and 16-of-18 on field goals, for 76 points on the year. His 53-yard field goal in the third quarter was a career-long and also the second-longest by a freshman in CU history. Stefanou has been more than clutch for the Buffaloes this season. He has gone 3-for-3 in four games this season, including Saturday's game at Arizona State; he made nine in a row earlier this year and now has a string of six consecutive. Stefanou looks to continue his success this Saturday at Folsom Field against the Trojans of USC.

On the soccer field, Jalen Tompkins made five saves to lead CU to its fifth consecutive shutout on Friday in a 2-0 win at Utah. Tompkins has been stellar all year and has no signs of slowing down. Tompkins made a spectacular diving save in the 33rd minute to punch away a shot from the top of the box and made another key save in the 81st minute on a shot that was headed to the upper-left corner of the net. Adding to her already red-hot season in goal, she broke CU's individual record for consecutive shutout minutes, stretching her current streak to 498 minutes. The Buffs secured sixth place in the Pac-12 with their 11th win of the season as they finished Pac-12 play with a 5-4-2 record in conference-only matches.

The following match on Nov. 3, Smith guided CU to its fifth win over a ranked opponent, No. 11 Washington, with another powerful 3-0 win (25-22, 25-18, 25-18). She recorded a match-high 14 kills and hit .500 with two errors on 24 attacks while adding two aces and 13 digs. The sweep over the Huskies is the second sweep the Buffs have over a ranked team this season. CU improved to 19-6 on the season and 9-5 in the Pac-12.
