Buffs in Fourth With Play Suspended at Bruin Wave Invite

February 27, 2017 | Women's Golf

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. — The University of Colorado women's golf team sits in fourth place at the Bruin Wave Invitational as play was suspended here in the second round Monday due to darkness.

The Buffaloes opened the day strong firing a 9-over par 301 in the first round of the par-73, 6,357-yard course at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. Colorado's momentum slowed as they dropped a spot before the horn sounded for the players to clear the course in round two. Colorado is 28-over par with each Buff having at least three holes left to finish Tuesday before the final round gets underway.

"The team played pretty well the first round especially Brittany had a very solid day along with Kirsty," said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. "Unfortunately, during the middle of the second round we had a stretch of very bad holes that hurt us, toward the end of the second round, which is not completed yet, each group has 2 to 3 holes left to play, the team bounced back a bit.

Top-ranked Stanford sits atop the leaderboard at 9-over par. UCLA is 13 strokes behind at 22-over par and in second place. The No. 2 ranked USC Trojans sit in third posting a 25-over par while Colorado sits in fourth (28-over) while Washington and Cal are tied for fifth at 29-over par.

"This is one of The toughest courses our team has played with the added difficulty of wet conditions and the wind in the afternoon, made for a very challenging day," Kelly said.

Junior Brittany Fan is tied for ninth at 4-over par through 32 holes. She turned in a solid 1-over par 74 performance in the first round, while tallying one birdie and 15 pars. Fan found the second round to be just a bit more challenging as she is 3-over par through 14 holes.

Senior Esther Lee is not far behind teammate Fan on the leaderboard as she finds herself tied for 18th overall at 7-over par through 33 holes. Lee carded a 2-over 75 in round one, sinking a team-high three birdies. Lee began the second round with four straight pars but then followed it up with a bogey on the par-3 hole 14. The second round is proving to be tough for Lee as she has recorded five bogeys through 14 holes.

Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins tied with Fan posting a team best score on the day of 74 on the first round. Hodgkins carded two birdies and 13 pars in the first round to finish with her 1-over 74. The second round is not agreeing with Hodgkins as she is currently 6-over through 15 holes. She recorded three straight bogeys on holes one through three but rallied to birdie two holes in the front nine.

Robyn Choi enters Tuesday tied in 42nd place with a 12-over par performance. Choi was up and down in her first round of the day but seemed to settle in at the end of the day as she recorded four straight pars to end her day. With three holes left to play Choi is currently 7-over par.

Gillian Vance is tied for 54th at 14-over par with three holes left to be played in the second round. Vance was 9-over par after the first round of action and moved up nine places with a 5-over performance thus far in the second round.

UCLA's Lilia Vu leads the tournament with a subpar score at 2-under with four holes remaining in round two. Momoko Kobori from Pepperdine is one stroke behind at 1-under par through 33 holes. Three players-Martina Edberg, Albane Valenzuela and Jisoo Keel are all tied for third at even par and all have at least two holes to play before moving to round three.

"I am proud of the team for bouncing back in the second round and we hope to finish that round off well. It will be important for our team to play a solid third round and see if we can move up in the standings," Kelly said

The tournament concludes Tuesday with players picking up where they left off at 9:00 a.m. MT and then immediately continue into the final round.
