Jeremy Paul tied for fourth in individual race as well
BANDON, Ore. — The University of Colorado men's golf team had some struggles here Monday but in the end hung in there, slipping two notches into a tie for fourth through two rounds of the 8th Annual Bandon Dunes Championship.
No. 8 Oregon maintained its lead in owning a 16-under par score of 560 through 36 holes; the Ducks and rival Oregon State scored the best rounds Monday with 3-under 285. No. 9 Texas Tech is in second, 10 strokes out at 6-under 570 after playing to a 1-under par 287 in the second round. The Beavers, ranked 87th, are third with a 571 score, with No. 21 Colorado and No. 12 Texas A&M tied for fifth at 575.
Senior Jeremy Paul turned in a fantastic round in tough conditions, fashioning a 4-under 68 that has him tied for fourth 5-under for the tournament on the 6,893-yard, par-72 Old MacDonald Course layout. He started out on fire with four birdies in his first six holes before playing even the rest of the way; he had six birdies, third-most in the field for the round, with 10 pars and just two bogeys. He added to his school record with his 65th subpar round of his career.
Talk about consistency, he is playing each of the par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes seventh-best in the field of 90 golfers.
Junior Yannik Paul is tied for 25th after shooting a 4-over 76 for a 2-over 146 score overall. He had a rough front nine, finishing 4-over par, but he hunkered down and played the back nine even. He had three birdies and nine pars against five bogeys and a double. He is playing the par-3 holes this week at 1-under, fourth-best overall.
Senior Ethan Freeman carded a 3-over 75, which has him at 4-over 148 and in a tie for 38th. He had one birdie and 13 pars against four bogeys, with his par count tied for the fourth-most in the field.
Junior John Souza is tied for 49th after firing a 1-over 73, CU's second-best score of the second round, which gave him a 5-over par 149. Rebounding a bit from an up-and-down first 18 holes, he had four birdies and nine pars against five pive bogeys.
Junior Spencer Painton, who had CU's best score in the first round with a 3-under 69, struggled to the highest in the second with an 8-over 80; that gave him a 5-over 149 and is also tied for 49th. While managing three birdies, he had just six pars to counter seven bogeys and two doubles, with all the bad stuff happening on his last 10 holes; he was 6-under for the tournament after birdies on Nos. 4, 7 and 8, but from that point on, he had just one par and was over on the other nine in an unorthodox 33-47 for his rounds of nine.
"It was a spectacular round by Jeremy, CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "He tied for the low score of the day, and just three others broke 70 with the course playing more difficult. John did a nice job saving his round and Yannik came back after a rough start but it was not our best other than Jeremy's round. As always the guys battled and you have to do that out here. We are looking forward to get back out tomorrow and competing. We have a chance to beat some very good teams here."
Texas Tech's Hannes Ronneblad continued to hold the individual lead, adding a 71 in the second round to follow up his 7-under 65 to open play; his 8-under 136 leads Oregon's Ryan Gronlund by a stroke.
The third and final round is set for Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. MST; the Buffaloes will be paired with No. 71 Georgia State, Denver and No. 23 Auburn and will tee off on holes 5 through 8.
