Golfers Slip Into 18th Place Tie At "The Goodwin"

Second Straight Tough Day For the Buffaloes
STANFORD, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team continued to struggle here this week, as the Buffaloes had hoped to make a comeback after a rough first round but instead slipped three notches into a tie for 18th place Friday as the second round of Stanford's "The Goodwin," was put into the books.
Host and No. 12 Stanford continues to hold the lead with a team score of 4-over par 564, but the Cardinal's seven-shot lead after the first round was shaved down to one. No. 1 Southern California made a charge in posting the best round of the day (an even-par 280) to close to within a single stroke at 565. No. 15 UNLV (573), No. 37 Washington (574) and No. 5 Oregon (577) round out the top five.
No. 18 Colorado is tied for 18th with a 39-over par 599 score, as the Buffs have recorded their two worst scores in relation to par all season over the two days here. A 21-over 301 Friday, just the second 300-plus score Colorado has posted this season, after Thursday's 18-over has led to CU's total.
In the opening round, the Buffs played the front nine at 2-over before ballooning to 16-over on the back nine; Friday, CU opened on No. 10 and the scorers were 4-over at the turn and battling a second straight day of windy conditions as well as anyone. But just two birdies and 13 bogeys and a triple along with a switch in the fourth scorer led to 17 strokes being lost.
"It was another tough day," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "I thought we battled and competed but the results just weren't there. Usually if one part of our games are off we can rely on other parts but we didn't really have much going right today results-wise. However, our inputs are good and I am confident we will have a good day tomorrow. We still have an opportunity to go out in the morning and move up the leaderboard."
Senior Ethan Freeman has CU's best score through two rounds on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford University Golf Course, though he had the high score Friday with a 7-over 77; he is tied for 30th with a 6-over 146 total. He turned at even-par but doubled the par-5 No. 1 hole and bogeyed six of the next eight holes, though he managed to fit a birdie in there. Overall, he had two birdies and eight pars against seven bogeys and a double in the second round, with his eight birdies overall still the team best and tied for fifth in the 126-man field entering the final round.
The next four Buffaloes were all separated by two strokes Friday and by two shots overall.
Junior Spencer Painton carded a 4-over 76 and stands tied for 74th with an 11-over 151 score. He played each nine at 3-over and finished his day with one birdie and 10 pars countered by seven bogeys.
Senior Jeremy Paul has the exact same breakdown as Painton (one birdie, 10 pars and seven bogeys) for his second straight 76, with his 12-over 152 total for 83rd. The back-to-back 76s to open a tournament are a rarity for Paul; this his 46th event as a Buffalo and on only five occasions has he not recorded at least one round of par or better.
Junior John Souza also stands at 12-over 152 after he recorded CU's best second round effort with a 4-over 74; he had two birdies and 11 pars against four birdies and a double.
Junior Yannik Paul fashioned a 5-over 75 for a 13-over 153, tying him for 89th; he had a team-high 14 pars, with a birdie, one bogey and a triple.
Brigham Young's Rhett Rasmussen assumed the individual lead after carding a tournament-best 64 for a 4-under 136 through 36 holes. That leads a quartet of players by four strokes.
The third and final round is set for Saturday, with sunny skies expected and the winds finally dying down. The Buffaloes will be paired with Nevada and Pacific, and will tee off on No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. MDT.

NOTES: The winds whipped up for a second straight day, gusting from 15 to 20 miles per hour before leveling off a bit the last two hours of play … The average score Friday was 74.82, up a shade from 74.79 in the first round; if the winds die down as expected, and with eight top 40 teams in the field, that number should drop considerably Saturday … The par-3 holes have been particularly frustrating for the Buffaloes, as they have played them at a collective 26-over; only Pacific at 28-over has played the short ones higher … CU's school record run of nine straight top five finishes is in obvious danger, but the Buffaloes still own the best single round (a 22-under 266) in the NCAA this season so anything can happen ... Team rounds of 300 in a 5-for-4 scoring meet have been rare for the Buffs; CU had just two last year as well, after a combined 20 the previous three seasons … Colorado entered the meet playing with its highest ranking since being 14th in the spring of 1981.
