Buffaloes Struggle For Second Straight Tournament
EDMOND, Okla. — The University of Colorado men's golf team endured some struggles for a second straight tournament, as the Buffaloes are in 12th place after two round of "The Maxwell," both of which were completed here Friday.
Co-host and No. 2 Oklahoma State is the leader heading into the final round with a 7-over 567; No. 48 New Mexico is second at 569, with the other co-host, No. 13 Oklahoma in third at 571. No. 3 Baylor (579) and No. 49 Liberty (583) round out the top five.
The No. 23-ranked Buffaloes turned in a 604 score, or 44-over par, scoring a 303 in the first round and a 301 in the second and ended the day in 12th place.
Colorado couldn't get much going in either round, making just seven birdies in the morning and only six in the afternoon, not nearly enough to counter an uncharacteristic run of big numbers. The Buffaloes did hang in, playing the last five holes at just 3-over, but the damage had been done with four times as many bogeys (52) than birdies (13, the second-fewest in the field), with 11 doubles and a triple.
Junior John Souza turned in CU's best performance of the day, a 9-over 149 on the 7,102-yard, par-70 Oak Tree Country Club East Course layout. He opened with a 75 and came back with a 74, the latter matched by two teammates. He had just one birdie in each round, but a team-high 24 pars helped keep things in check against nine bogeys and a double. He played the par-4s at 4-over, tying for 19th best in the 80-man field.
Junior Yannik Paul is one back of Souza with a 76-74—150 (10-over par) effort, tied in 47th place. He did not birdie in the opening round but came back with a team-best three in the afternoon; he had 21 pars and 11 bogeys and matched Souza with just one hole worse than bogey (a double). He settled down and played his last seven holes at 1-under.
Senior Ethan Freeman sits in a tie for 50th after fashioning a 77-74—151 scorecard Friday (11-over), as he had a team-high four birdies and 20 pars against nine bogeys and three doubles. He overcame a morning stretch where he was even through nine holes but played his next seven at 9-over before closing with two of his birdies. The second time around the Oak Tree track he mimicked Yannik Paul and played his last seven at 1-under.
Senior Jeremy Paul, CU's stroke average leader coming in at 71.48 and the owner of 23 school records, never really came untracked Friday, posting a 75-79—154 scorecard to stand in 68th place. He did record an eagle, the 18th of his career, which snapped a tie with two others for the most in CU history; otherwise, he had two birdies and 19 pars against 10 bogeys and four doubles.
Junior Spencer Painton recorded a pair of 79s for an 18-over 158 total, tying him for 74th. He had two birdies and 18 pars against 13 bogeys, two doubles and a triple; he played the last six holes at 11-over as he struggled to close each round, though he did sneak one of his birdies in there late in the first round.
"Today was far from our best," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "This was due to a variety of reasons. We made too many big numbers and missed in some bad spots into greens. However, the main issue was the short game – we lost a lot of shots in the short game. Our chipping and lag putting needs to improve. Our guys fought back in it and we are proud of them for competing."
UCLA's Hidetoshi Yoshihara owns the individual lead after firing a tournament-best 4-under 66 in the second round, which made him the only player under par through 36 holes (1-under 139). However, that leads a quartet of players by a single shot, with 12 players overall within three shots of the lead.
The third and final round is set for Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. MDT shotgun start; this tournament is unique as being the final one for all participants have their conference meets, the teams all play together in fivesomes. It will be CU's final round of competition ahead of the Pac-12 Championships which it is hosting at Boulder Country Club from April 28-30.
