Cammon Steps Down To Accept Head Coaching Position At Long Beach State

May 11, 2017 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball assistant coach Jeff Cammon has stepped down to accept the head coaching position at Long Beach State. LBSU announced the hiring late Wednesday evening.

Cammon joined the Buffs in the summer of 2016 as part of head coach JR Payne's first staff. He worked primarily with the wings. Under Payne, he helped CU to one of the best single-season turnarounds in school history as the Buffs more than doubled their win total from the previous year. CU finished the year 17-16 overall and tied for ninth in the Pac-12, a year after a last-place finish in the conference. The Buffs also reached the third round of the WNIT, their first postseason appearance since 2014.

CU started the season 10-0 for just the fifth time in school history, including a win over No. 15/19 Kentucky. The 10-game winning streak was the longest since 2012. In Pac-12 play, the Buffs' signature win came on Feb. 12 when they upset No. 24 California on the road, their first win over a ranked team on the road since 2007. Cammon had coached at Cal the previous season.

Three players earned postseason awards from the Pac-12, including first-team all-conference sophomore Kennedy Leonard, who was among the conference and national leaders in scoring, assists, steals and assist/turnover ratio. Haley Smith and Alexis Robinson were both named honorable mention All-Pac-12 and Smith was also honorable mention for the All-Defensive team.

"Long Beach has just hired one of the finest men I know," Payne said. "Jeff is a hard-working, loyal and passionate coach, who will work tirelessly to continue the success of Beach women's basketball. I am thankful for all that he brought to CU in his time here and am excited for all that he will do at Long Beach. The future at LBSU is definitely bright!"

Cammon is returning to Long Beach State, where he served as an assistant coach for five seasons from 2009-14. He replaces Jody Wynn, who was head coach for eight seasons and for whom Cammon worked under as an assistant during his time at LBSU.
