Alexa Smith Hammers 17 Kills In the Win

NORMAN, Okla. — In the first ever meeting between the Seton Hall and Colorado volleyball programs, it was the Buffs who came out victorious, blanking the Pirates (1-1) to earn their second win of the season on Saturday morning at the NIKE Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.

WHAT HAPPENED: For the second straight contest, junior outside hitter Alexa Smith led the Buffs, this time hammering 17 kills. She committed just one error on 33 swings to hit .485.  As impressive as that hitting percentage was, it was not the best on the team as junior middle blocker Naghede Abu hit over .500 (.562) with nine kills on 16 errorless attacks.

Junior Frankie Shebby recorded the second best kills total for the team with 10. Freshman setter Brynna Deluzio did a great job running the Buffs' offense as she handed out 41 assists in the three sets in her second collegiate start.

SET 1: CU used a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 lead in the set, forcing the Pirates to use a timeout. CU went on to extend the lead to six points (15-9) before SHU tallied four straight points; then it was CU's turn to call for a break. The two sides battled, but the Buffs never relinquished the lead. SHU used its final timeout of the set when the Buffs were up 22-19 and were able to even the score by taking the next three points, but CU answered with a 3-0 run to take the frame 25-22.

SET 2: The Buffs again got a good lead early in the game, going up 11-6 and forcing SHU to use a timeout.  The Pirates cut the Buffs lead to three a few times, but each time CU responded. The Buffs used a 5-0 run near the end of the frame to take a 23-15 lead before the Pirates recorded three consecutive points to cut the CU lead to five. But the Buffs answered back, recording the next two points to take the set 25-18.

SET 3: The third set was very close to start off. It was tied at 9-9 when CU used a 4-1 run to go up 13-10. After a kill by the Pirates, the Buffs strung together four straight kills, one from Abu and three from Hayes, to put themselves up by six (17-11). SHU tried to stay in the game, but the Buffs held them off, securing the set win (25-19).

TEAM STATISTICS: The Buffs again had the advantage in the stats sheet. CU hit .292 with 47 kills and just 12 errors on 120 attacks, while the Pirates hit .167 with 41 kills and 21 errors on 120 attacks. The Buffs had three aces to SHU's one and also out-blocked the Pirates 10.0-6.0. SHU did have the slight edge in digs at 48-46.

OTHER INDIVIDUAL STATS: Anna Pfefferle had three kills and no errors to hit .429 and added three block assists. Joslyn Hayes recorded seven kills to hit .294.

NOTEABLE: Smith recorded 11 digs to earn her first double-double of the season....CU is 2-0 to start the season.
