Thomas: #BlackoutBoyz Shine As Buffs Offense Breaks Out

September 16, 2017 | Football

BOULDER — Colorado's receivers showed their depth Saturday against Northern Colorado in CU's 41-21 victory over the Bears.

The Buffs' four starting wideouts all caught at least four passes and made it into the end zone in the win.  It was the first time four different CU receivers caught a touchdown pass since five did against Cal in 2014.

Devin Ross, Bryce Bobo, Shay Fields and Jay MacIntyre all hauled in touchdown passes from Steven Montez.

"I told all the receivers we were going to get touchdowns today and we went out there and did," MacIntyre said." Steven is such a talented player, he's got such a good arm and can make plays out of the pocket, and he showed it today and he was able to spread the ball around."

Ross lead the team with 143 yards on eight receptions and one touchdown.  He was just 10 yards off his career best of 153 yards, which he accomplished against Oregon last season, and it was his first 100-yard game since Washington State last year, when he had eight catches for 121 yards.

"It definitely felt great, personally," Ross said on his first touchdown. "I'm not a selfish person at all, though, so I'm just glad we got the win. I do like to produce, though, so I'm glad I got my first touchdown of the season."

On the throwing end, Montez had a career high in nearly every category as his 29 completions, 41 attempts, 357 yards and 4 touchdown passes were all career bests. He completed passes to seven different players. Montez and the four starting receivers also had all 16 first downs earned in the passing game.

"He's getting more and more comfortable with the offense," MacIntyre said of Montez's success. "He's getting more comfortable staying in the pocket, trusting our O-line and just being comfortable being himself. That's what makes him great, he's kind of like that 'it' factor-type thing."

The Buffs were looking to play a complete game against Northern Colorado as they head into next Saturday's  Pac-12 opener against defending league champion and sixth-ranked Washington at Folsom Field (8 p.m., FS1). The offense still made some mistakes but was able to distribute the ball to a slew of #BlackoutBoyz.

"When you see everyone in the receiving corps catch a touchdown, that is just a special moment," Fields said. "It probably happens once every year, if that. For that to happen to every receiver, that's just a great thing."

Bobo tallied 77 yards on six receptions with a touchdown while Fields had 69 yards on eight receptions and the second touchdown of the game. The final touchdown of the game was a 14-yard strike to MacIntyre to put the Buffs up by 17 en route to the 20 point win. MacIntyre finished with four catches for 53 yards.

"We definitely feel like we can put a lot of points up whenever," MacIntyre said. "I think our defense has faith in us to put points up and we have faith in our defense to stop them. Games are going to go differently, sometimes they are going to score, sometimes we are going to score."
