Buffs Extend Shutout Streak In Scoreless Draw

September 02, 2017 | Soccer

BOULDER - No. 21 Colorado settled for a 0-0 draw on Saturday against CSUN at Prentup Field. The Buffs are now 3-0-2 overall, while CSUN is 2-0-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs dominated play from the start, but could not find the goal as the Matadors set back on defense and limited CU's dangerous chances.

Colorado outshot CSUN 24-7 in the match and its best chance of the day came in the eighth minute when Hannah Cardenas hit the crossbar on a shot from inside the box. The next-best chance came in the 72nd minute when Tatum Barton collected a pass at the top of the 6-yard box, spun and fired on net, but Matadors goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill somehow came up with the sliding save.

Both teams had limited opportunities in overtime, but CSUN's only dangerous scoring chance of the day came in the 108th minute when Cynthia Sanchez pushed ahead of CU's defense on the right side and got off a strong shot in the box, but Jalen Tompkins was able to control the save to preserve the shutout.

KEY STATISTICS: Tompkins had two saves on the day to earn her second solo shutout of the season. Taylor Kornieck had seven shot attempts, including two on goal--both totals equaling the entire CSUN team.

NOTES: CU extended its shutout streak (matches) to five matches, tying the school record set in 2013 ... the current shutout streak (minutes) was extended to 517:58, the second-longest streak in school history (longest is 551:54 from Nov. 2, 2012 to Sept. 8, 2013) ... the last time CU had two scoreless draws in the same season was 2012.

UP NEXT: The Buffs host BYU on Monday at 1 p.m.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Danny Sanchez, head coach

On the match
"We knew that their goalkeeper was very good and she dealt with everything she needed to. She was probably the 'man of the match' in my opinion. Defensively, I thought we pressed them well. We won the ball in good spots. There needs to be someone that's going to take the game by the neck and say 'I'm going to win the game,' and it can't be from the bench, it can't be from the coaching staff, it has to be from the field. That's the one piece that's disappointing to me. We gave up one chance in the whole game, and that was a half chance at best with JJ [Tompkins]. Going forward, I would like to see a little bit more composure. If we score in the first ten minutes when we hit the crossbar, it's a totally different game. As the game goes on it's natural...you start to press, you start to look at the clock, and I felt that when we needed the composure from the players on the field we didn't have it today. Having said that, we defended great, we won balls in dangerous spots, we got numbers forward, our outside backs ran a lot and got forward, it just didn't happen for us."

On dictating the tempo
"I thought we controlled the tempo for 110 minutes. There was never a moment I felt we were getting stretched out or anything, I thought we defended very well. It was really all about the element of composure, and getting something from those first 20 minutes when we had corners and hit the cross bar. We didn't take advantage of that momentum. They had a tough game on Thursday, they were tired and we didn't take advantage of it enough to find the goal. We find a goal, the game is ours. We knew that was going to be the challenge, and unfortunately we didn't. Having said that, I remember the Michigan State game last year where we dominated more than we did today, and we lost the game. We gave up a couple cheap goals, and we lost the game. You have to keep things in perspective, and we didn't give up a goal, we defended well, we should've gotten more out of the game than we did, but we got something out of it so we just have to regroup and get ready for BYU on Monday."

On playing BYU on Monday
"It's all about rest and recovery. Are they going to be professional with (training staff) Kari Kebach and Karim Derqaoui? Yeah, they will. We'll do all we can with our great facilities to get them back close to 100 percent. We don't have to travel which is obviously an advantage, so we'll rest and recover the rest of today, we'll come out tomorrow with some energy, we'll get some work done, and we'll get ready for Monday. If you can't get up for Monday, you don't have a pulse. So I expect that we'll be up and we'll play with a little more fire in our belly on Monday."

On Tompkins's overtime save
"It was a bad counter, a bad giveaway at the top of the box after a corner that we've talked about a million times. Having said that, I thought Hannah Cardenas defended it pretty well, and JJ was there to make the save. That's what she needs to do. If you play 110 minutes against a good team, you're going to give up chances, and obviously she dealt with the one she needed to to get us a draw."
