Five Buffs Teams Nationally Ranked; Three Top-10 Teams Visit CU This Weekend
September 20, 2017 | General, Neill Woelk
BOULDER — Roughly one month into the fall season, it's been a good year already for Colorado athletics.
Five Buffs programs are currently ranked in the nation's top 25, with two others receiving votes in the national polls. A host of CU student-athletes in almost every sport have received conference or national honors — and three Buffs teams will play host to top 10 Pac-12 foes this weekend in Boulder.
Overall, the Buffs have a 65-6-3 record thus far in all competitions.
A quick roundup:
Volleyball — Jesse Mahoney's team last week knocked off No. 22 Colorado State in the Rams' home gym, a victory that bumped the 10-1 Buffs up into the No. 25 spot in this week's national coaches' poll. CU's Alexa Smith was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and was also the VolleyMob National Player of the Week while Brynna Deluzio was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
This week, the No. 25 Buffs travel to No. 16 Utah on Friday, then play host to fourth-ranked and defending national champion Stanford on Sunday at noon at the Coors Events Center.
Soccer — Danny Sanchez's Buffs are 6-1-2 and are coming off a record-breaking 6-1 win over rival Denver. The Buffs reached as high as No. 25 in the national polls earlier in the year and are still receiving votes in the polls. Joss Orejel was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week in late August and freshman Marty Puketapu last week played for the New Zealand National Team in a pair of games.
This week, the Buffs play host to top-ranked UCLA in a 3:30 p.m. match Friday at Prentup Field.
Football — Mike MacIntyre's Buffs are 3-0 and have been receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches' poll.
This week, the Buffs play host to No. 7 Washington in a rematch of last year's Pac-12 championship game. The nationally televised game (FS1) is set for 8 p.m. Saturday at Folsom Field.
Cross country — Mark Wetmore's team hasn't hit the "meat" of its schedule, but the Buffs are once again ranked among the nation's best. The latest coaches' poll has the CU women ranked No. 1 in the nation and the men No. 4. The Buffs will split their squad next week, with some competing at the Joe Paine Invitational at Notre Dame on Sept. 29 with the rest taking part in the annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on Sept. 30 in Boulder.
The next "big" meet for the Buffs will be the Oct. 14 Pre Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
Women's golf — Anne Kelly's Buffs opened the fall schedule with a third-place finish in the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., with sophomore Robyn Choi finishing in a tie for fifth. The Buffs were ranked 22nd in the nation in the latest GolfWeek rankings, and will compete next in the Gonzaga Collegiate Invitational next week.
Men's golf — Roy Edwards' Buffs opened their fall season with a third place finish in the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Air Force Academy, with senior Yannik Paul finishing in a tie for third. The Buffs, ranked 15th in the latest GolfWeek rankings, play this weekend in the Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque.
