September 26, 2017 | General, Men's Golf, Volleyball
BOULDER - Colorado announced its winners of the UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. John Souza, a men's golfer, won the male award and Alexa Smith picked up the female award.
Â
Souza who got the job done for the Buffs on the golf course last week. He was the top performing Buffalo at New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The senior tied for 11th with a 3-over 219 after wrapping up play with an even-par 72. He shot 71-76 in the first two rounds. The highly-talented golfer led the entire field in par-3 scoring at 1-under, the only golfer to play all 12 "short ones" under par. His impressive 12 birdies over three rounds tied for the third-most, as he also logged 28 pars against 13 bogeys and a lone double. After opening with a pair of bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9, Souza bounced back to play the next 10 holes at 4-under. After lighting up the golf course for the majority of his play, he led CU to a sixth-place tie in the event.

The female athlete of the week award goes to junior Alexa Smith, who led the No. 25 Buffs against a pair of top-25 opponents to start the Pac-12 Conference season. Smith averaged 4.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set, while picking up a pair of double-doubles. In the contest against No. 16 Utah on Friday, Smith tallied 11 kills and 15 digs. She was targeted by the Utes on serve-receive, receiving 34 serves, and did not commit a single error. Two days later against No. 4 Stanford, she helped CU to a near-upset of the Cardinal, tying a career-high of 25 kills. Smith hit .221 and added another 12 digs. Once again she was perfect in service reception on eight serves.
