Buffs Watch Record Shutout Streak Come To An End In Loss At Texas

September 08, 2017 | Soccer

AUSTIN, Texas - 25th-ranked Colorado suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-0 at Texas on Friday evening in Austin. The Buffs dropped to 4-1-2, while the Longhorns improved to 6-0-0 to stay perfect on the season.

The Buffs entered the match as one of just five teams in the country that had yet to concede a goal. The school-record shutout streak ended at 621 minutes and 10 seconds.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Longhorns found the net in the 14th minute on a shot from Katie Glenn at the top of the box between two CU defenders.

They found the net again in the 25th minute on an impressive one-touch deflection by Alexa James at the six-yard box off a cross from the left side by Cyera Hintzen.

Haley Berg added another for Texas in the 48th minute on another strike from the top of the 18, just moments after Megan Massey had a shot blocked in the Texas box.

CU pressured for much of the final 30 minutes, but was unable to get a great look at the net.

KEY STATISTICS: Texas held a 12-10 advantage in shot attempts and controlled the run of play through the first hour.

NOTES: CU's school record shutout streak ended at 621:10 (previous record was 551:54) ... Jalen Tompkins's individual shutout streak ended at 454:57, the fourth-longest in CU history ... the Buffs dropped to 3-3 against the Big 12 under head coach Danny Sanchez ... it is the first 6-0-0 start to a season in Texas history.

UP NEXT: CU will play at UTSA on Sunday at 6 p.m. MT in San Antonio.

On what happened with Texas scoring two goals early in the match and then scoring again early in the second half
"We knew we were going to give up goals [this season] and we gave up that early goal, but it was more the way we weren't closing things down. We weren't tight in the back; we were giving them way too much room to operate and they took advantage of it. So they get the first goal and then after that I thought it was ok, not great, and then we turn around and give up the second goal, which was disappointing. We weren't compact; we weren't marking in the box. So we came out in the beginning of the second half and we were putting them under all kinds of pressure in their box, the ball pops out. The next thing you know, it's at the top of our box and the player turns and hits a shot that takes two hops and goes into the goal. So it was disappointing from that side of things. But like I told the team, if you're going to lose 3-0, you kind of want it to be a little more convincing. I felt the last 20 minutes of the game, obviously they relaxed a little bit, but I thought we played better. But at that point the game was gone.

On Texas as a team
"It's a good team, they were hungry, and they just simply played better...We simply didn't play well enough, and if you play like that on the road against a good team, you're not going to get a result."

On looking ahead to Sunday's match at UTSA (the Roadrunners entered Friday wth a 1-4-0 record)
"Like I told the team, if you're going to have a mixed performance at best and not get a result, you want to turn around an play as quick as you can. Sometimes a short turnaround is bad, but I think in this situation, a short turnaround is good. We don't play until Sunday night so we have a good opportunity to get 48 hours off. We'll rest and recover. And if you look, some of our toughest games have been against teams that have struggled. UTSA has played a brutal schedule. They've played three Big 12 teams already, so they're not going to be intimidated by us. We're going to have to come out and play our best soccer on the road. We'll be ready to play and I expect a better performance on Sunday."
