O'Loughlin Posts Fourth Top Ten Finish
PARKER — The University of Colorado men's golf team finished up the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule here Tuesday by tying for fourth in the Denver's Paintbrush Invitational.
A dozen teams battled the elements over two days, including frost delays, chilly temperatures rain and stoppages due to light snowfall. When all was said and done, Colorado State captured the team title with a 6-over par 870 team score, pulling away from the field over the last nine holes. Oregon finished dsecond, eight back at 14-over 878, with Northern Colorado taking the bronze position at 19-over 883.
The Buffaloes tied for fourth with Loyola-Marymount with 23-over par 887 scores. CU was in the hunt for the first portion of the day, and was 3-under early in the final round but closed poorly, particularly after a lengthy delay due to light snowfall during the Noon hour. The four players who would account for the Buffs' team score finished their last six holes a combined 13-ove par.
"We were in a great position to start the day," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We had three holes left (from Monday) and were actually playing pretty well through 10 or 11 holes, but then it started snowing. We had a delay of about 50 minutes, but when we came back out, we just didn't play very well.
"We were competing to win the tournament, as we were right there with seven or eight holes left, but we didn't play holes 2 through 6 very well. We simply didn't respond well after the delay and that's why we finished fourth. We're all disappointed to end the fall on this kind of note."
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin once again led the Buffalo scorers, as he tied for sixth with a 1-under 215 score for 54 holes on the 7,513-yard, par-72 Colorado Golf Club course layout. He closed with a 4-over 76 Tuesday after entering the final round in second place; the second round had been completed earlier in the day after being suspended due to darkness Monday. It was his fourth top 10 finish this fall, with his other finish a respectable 21st. He had nine birdies and eight bogeys sandwiched around 37 pars for the event.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski and junior Andre Leveque both tied for 17th after finishing with 5-over 221 scores, though arriving at that total in different manners. Olkowski turned in a scorecard of 74-73-74, while Leveque managed a 1-under 71 Tuesday (after rounds of 77-73); the 71 tied for the ninth-best score in the final round.
Freshman Kristoffer Max tied for 28th with a 9-over 225 performance; he had recorded a pair of 73s in the first two rounds but ran into trouble in the final 18, as a quadruple bogey on the par-3 17th accounted for most of his strokes over par in closing with a 7-over 79. He had a team-high 14 birdies for the Buffs here.
Another CU freshman, John Paterson, tied for 39th after he wrapped things with a 1-over 73; that gave him a 13-over 229 for the two days. He scored a team-high six birdies Tuesday (11 total over the two days), and was actually 4-under par 10 holes into the final round before struggling down the stretch.
Junior Ross Macdonald could never get much going as he finished up the fall season with a 17-over 233 score; he had rounds of 79, 78 and 76 and tied for 51st. He didn't post a lot of high numbers (just one double bogey), he had 26 pars and 21 bogeys, the latter offset by just six birdies.
Edwards paused to reflect back on his team's fall season.
"I thought it was okay, our two wins were actually really good, but when we played poorly, things just weren't good at all," he said. "Moving forward, we need to get more consistent. Daniel had a really good fall, for the most part five solid tournaments. I saw good moments from every player on the roster. Despite the inconsistencies this fall, I'm really excited about this team's direction and what we're going to look like at the end of the year."
Colorado State's Oscar Teiffel earned medalist honors by carding the low score of the final round, and the only one in the 60s: a 5-under 67, which propelled him to a 10-under 206 total and a three-stroke win over Loyola-Marymount's Riley Elmes.
The Buffaloes will resume play in January with their annual Alumni match in Scottsdale, and then will participate in Hawai'i-Hilo's Amer Ari Invitational to officially open the spring season in February.
NOTES: The average score for the event was 75.88, as there were just 33 subpar and 10 even-par rounds out of the 216 played over the course of the chilly and wet two days … Colorado led the field in both birdies (49) and par-5 scoring (14-under); what hurt the Buffs was coming in next-to-last in pars with 132 … O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average for the fall with a 71.20 figure for 15 rounds (the eighth-best in school history; he owns the sixth-best at 71.0 last fall); Olkowski was second at 72.07 (19th on the list for the best fall averages) … Colorado won two tournaments (out of five) this fall.
