Buffs Open ITA Regional Championship On Strong Note

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A pair of doubles wins sparked three singles play victories for the University of Colorado women's tennis team in the opening day of the ITA Regional Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Buffs began play in the 64-team field at the ITA Championships at UNLV with a doubles victory from Monica Malinen and Vera Markovic. The duo picked up an 8-5 win against a tandem from BYU. Shortly after that the partnership of Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Megan Forster put down the second victory of the tournament with an 8-2 win against Nevada.
After a short break the quartet of Buffs began singles play. Andrinopoulos picked up the first win with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Kate Cusick of BYU. The next match wouldn't go the Buffs way as Forster was defeated in two sets, both by the score of 6-1 against Anna Riedmiller of Denver.
In the top half of the bracket, Markovic opened up play against Selena Tunulja of Nevada with a 7-5 opening game victory. Tunulja would notch the match with a 6-7 victory in the second set, but Markovic finished off the competition with a 6-3 match-deciding victory.
To close out the night Malinen took on Morgan Dickason of Weber State, sealing the victory with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
All four will be back in action tomorrow with the second round of doubles first. Following that Markovic, Andrinopoulos and Malinen will compete in the round of 64 then possibly the round of 32. Forster will be back in solo action in singles play Friday in the consolation singles.
