No. 15 Buffs Blank the Golden Bears
October 18, 2018 | Soccer
CU extends its unbeaten streak to a program record 16th game
BERKELEY, Calif.—The University of Colorado women's soccer team set a pair of records in its 3-0 win at California on Thursday.Â
The No. 15 Buffaloes extend their unbeaten streak to a program record 16 games, improving to 13-0-3 on the season and 5-0-2 in the Pac-12 Conference. Colorado's three goals on the afternoon give the team 46 on the season, setting the single-season record.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs and Golden Bears were cautious in the early goings of Thursday's contest. Each side had just one shot in the game's first 10 minutes.Â
Senior Jorian Baucom was the spark that set the fire for CU's offense in the first half. She pushed the pressure and created early goal-scoring opportunities for the Buffs. She got two good looks on net, sending chances just high and wide to build CU's momentum.Â
With the offense buzzing around the net, it was the Buffs that struck first in the 22nd minute. Baucom received the ball off a Colorado throw-in, deep in the Cal zone. She turned and centered the ball to junior Taylor Kornieck at the top of the six-yard box. She ripped a shot past Cal's Olivia Sekany with a blistering right-foot, for her first of the day.
Colorado continued to play the ball in the offensive zone, leading in shots 7-3 at the half.
CU's eighth shot of the afternoon resulted in a 2-0 lead right out of the halftime break. Tatum Barton set up Kornieck at the top of the box. Kornieck ran up and fired a laser of a shot to the far post, beating Sekany for her second goal of the game in the 47th minute.Â
The Buffs stayed hungry on offense and continued to fight. Kornieck had a look at the hat trick in the 71st minute, but could not get the shot off cleanly. The Buffs had back-to-back chances from Emily Groark and Stephanie Zuniga in the 78th minute.Â
It was the duo of Kornieck and Baucom that combined for the Buffs' third goal of the day in the 84th minute. Kornieck connected with Baucom just off the penalty spot. Baucom chested the ball and made a turn to her right, finding the back of the net.Â
Cal (5-8-2, 1-5-1) put six shots towards the net in the second half. Jalen Tompkins stood firm, making three saves on the day, completing her 17th career solo shutout. The win was also the 37th of her career, tying Jessica Keller for the most by a Buffalo. Â
KEY STATISTICS: CU's offense came from its top-3 scorers this season. All nine points were attributed to Kornieck (2 G, 1 A), Baucom (1 G, 1 A) and Barton (1 A).Â

On overall performance
"I thought we played really well. Cal is a team, like I said before the game, that has had mixed results. We know the quality of their team and coaching staff. We made some good adjustments as the game progressed in the first half. We got a great goal from Taylor [Kornieck]. Whenever you are on the road you want to play on the front foot and play with the lead. Then in the second half, I thought we played very well. We had a very good second goal. Erin Greening into Tatum [Barton] and then Taylor with the finish. Then the third goal killed it off. It was a really good play from Taylor to find Jorian [Baucom] in the box. We got everybody some good minutes. Any win on the road in the Pac-12 is a very good win."Â
On the play of Colorado's front line
"I thought our movement was very good today. I thought our link-play was very good, especially in the second half. I thought we were unfortunate to maybe not get another one [goal]. The combination play and the unselfishness was very good. I thought we scored three really good goals. Nothing cheap about any of them."Â
On the team's production
"I think it is all about our personnel. I think we are fortunate to have some players that are really performing well this year. We have some players that are coming off the bench who are keeping up the standard."
On looking forward to No. 1 Stanford
"Obviously, we are excited to play Stanford. Stanford is the class of the league and the class team in the country. I think our mindset going into it is that we need to play with confidence. Like I told the team, at the end of the day we have two more big games at home next week. It is not like it is the last game of the season. We are excited about the challenge. We respect their program and we really respect their players and coaches."
