No. 1 Stanford Snaps Buffs' Streak
October 21, 2018 | Soccer
Colorado drops first of the season
STANFORD, Calif.—The University of Colorado's record-setting unbeaten streak came to an end at 16 games on Sunday. The No. 1 Stanford Cardinal handed the No. 15 Buffaloes their first loss of the season, dropping the match 7-0 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
The loss moves Colorado to 5-1-2 in the Pac-12 Conference and 13-1-3 overall. Stanford extends its unbeaten streak to 37 games, improving to 7-0-0 in conference and 14-0-1 overall.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams entered the afternoon with two of the top offenses in the nation. The Cardinal offense started on a blistering pace, forcing the Buffs into an unfamiliar position.Â
Colorado, use to being the tone-setters, got caught early by the Cardinal. Stanford scored 1:40 into the match when Civana Kuhlmann capitalized off a set-piece on the game's first corner kick. The top-ranked team in the nation caught its second break in the 9th minute, drawing a foul inside the penalty area. Jordan DiBiasi's ensuing penalty kick beat CU goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins, giving Stanford the 2-0 advantage.
Stanford added three more goals in the first half, taking the 5-0 lead into the break. The Cardinal put nine of its 12 first-half shots on goal. Colorado had one shot on target in the first 45 minutes.Â
The pace slowed down in the second half but still saw Stanford add to its lead. The Cardinal put two more goals on the board in the final 45 minutes. Abby Greubel put her shot under a charging Scout Watson in the 51st minute. Catarina Macario got her second goal of the game in the 71st minute, beating Watson to the opposite post.
CU's best chance came in the 50th minute. Megan Massey put a ball in on Stanford's Alison Jahansouz. The Cardinal keeper got a piece of it, setting up a Colorado corner kick. Junior Taylor Kornieck was able to direct a solid header on net, but Jahansouz was there for the save.Â
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado's three shots on goals and eight total were the fewest this season.Â

UP NEXT: The Buffs return home for the remainder of the regular season. Colorado hosts No. 2 Southern California on Thursday and will take on UCLA on Sunday.Â
NOTES: Last time Colorado allowed five or more goals was its 2011 loss to UCLA (0-8)…it was Colorado's first shutout loss since its 1-0 loss at North Carolina in the 2017 NCAA Tournament…CU allowed five first-half goals, after allowing just one (at Arizona) all season…CU is now 0-8 all-time against top-ranked opponents.Â

Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On playing from behind early on
"All the credit to Stanford. They were very good on the day, probably the best they have been all season. We were disappointed to give up the early goal and then turn around and give up the second one. That almost killed the match off before it got started. I thought after that we settled down a little bit. Big picture, we were not good enough today but Stanford was very good."Â
On closing the regular season at home
"This was one game. It was one game on the road against the No. 1 team in the country. We can learn from this but we cannot read too much into it. We knew this was going to be a tough stretch, starting with today, and it was. It was something we expected to see. Now we must regroup and face a Southern California team that is No. 2 in the country and took this team [Stanford] to overtime on this same field. We knew the challenges coming up. We just have to be prepared. Big picture, we have to play better.Â
"Being home and in front of our fans, we need all of the support next weekend against USC and UCLA."
