Nixon's Career Day Turns Sour

October 27, 2018 | Football

BOULDER — If one were to look at Colorado sophomore wide receiver K.D. Nixon's stats for Saturday's game against Oregon State, one would be thoroughly impressed.

The Desoto, Texas, native set a single-game career-high in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, finishing with 13 catches for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He also established a career-high in first downs with eight.

The downside to Nixon's day, though, was that the Buffaloes had a 31-3 lead early in the third quarter, but couldn't hang on for the victory. Oregon State defeated Colorado 41-34 in overtime.

"My best game turned into my worst game," Nixon said.

Nixon averaged 15.2 yards per reception. Six of his 13 receptions were for gains of at least 10 yards or more, including a 32-yard touchdown reception along with 39 and 47-yard receptions to put the Buffs in the red zone.

Nixon became a nightmare for the Oregon State secondary in the first half. He finished the first half with nine catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. By halftime, he had already bettered his career highs he set against Colorado State, when he drew in six catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

But Nixon's personal record-setting day went south as the Buffs went to overtime.

After Oregon State scored a touchdown on its first drive in overtime, the Buffaloes were faced with third and goal from the 7-yard line. Junior quarterback Steven Montez made a nice throw towards Nixon in the back of the end zone. Nixon had the chance to complete the catch, but it ultimately fell out of his hands.

After Nixon's drop on third down, Montez tried to find senior wide receiver Juwann Winfree on fourth down, but the Beavers' secondary knocked the ball away to end the game.

"Honestly I blame it all on myself," Nixon said. "You know I should have stepped up. I caught the two touchdowns I had and I have to take the blame for it."

Despite Nixon's crucial drop, all he can do is look towards the next day and try to learn from his errors. He'll have a chance to do that when the Buffs travel to Tuscon, Ariz., to take on Arizona next Friday night.

"It's part of college football," Nixon said. "You have to come back (Sunday) and just watch the film, correct it, live with it and grow up for the next game."
