Weather:
- A chilly, overcast afternoon with temperatures in the high 40s. May see some rainfall later in the game. A light breeze is coming from the northwest at 5 mph.
Pregame:
- The No. 21 Buffaloes will take on the 3-2 Arizona State Sun Devils in an important Pac-12 South Division battle. Both Colorado and ASU look to take the outright lead in the division with a win this afternoon. The Buffs with a win would still retain their status as the only undefeated Pac-12 team.
- Colorado trails the all-time series against Arizona State with a 1-8 record. CU's lone victory in the series came from the meeting in 2016, when the Buffaloes came out on top 40-16.
- Sophomore wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. will look to keep his high-caliber season going tonight, as he's leading the nation with 9.5 receptions per game and 145.3 receiving yards per game.
First Quarter:
- Arizona State wins the coin toss and elects to defer to the second half. Colorado will receive. CU starts at the 25.
- The Buffs were able to get into ASU territory on the opening drive, but were unable to score. First play of the game gave the Buffs big yardage on a 20-yard sweep by K.D. Nixon. Sun Devils ball at the ASU 14 following the punt.
- TOUCHDOWN Arizona State. Eno Benjamin runs it in on third down from a yard out and the Sun Devils strike first. It concludes a lengthy 13 play, 86-yard drive lasting 6:33. Benjamin provided 43 yards on the ground for ASU during the drive and two costly CU penalties on two third downs gave ASU fresh sets of downs. 7-0 ASU, 5:47 left. ASU kick goes through the end zone.
- TOUCHDOWN Colorado. Just like that, the Buffs answer instantly with a one-yard rush by Shenault to level the score. It wraps up an 8 play, 75-yard drive only taking 2:55 off the clock. The big play came on 2nd and 4 from the ASU 42 as Steven Montez completed a 39-yard completion to Tony Brown. Game tied at 7, 2:52 left. Kickoff returned to the ASU 16.
- END OF THE FIRST QUARTER.
Second Quarter:
- On 3rd and short, Jase Franke and Lyle Tuiloma both combine to stop Benjamin from gaining enough for a first down. It puts ASU's kicking unit on the field to try a 53-yard field goal which misses wide left. Colorado takes over at the CU 36. 13:25 left.
- Colorado brings its field goal unit on to try a 38-yard field goal and James Stefanou misses wide left. An explosive play ensued on the drive leading up to the missed field goal, including a trick play with several pitches to Montez who made a 22-yard completion to Jay MacIntyre. 10:48 left.
- TOUCHDOWN Arizona State. Benjamin once again rushes it in from a yard out for the go-ahead score – his second of the afternoon. Arizona State did well once again in taking significant time off the clock. They engineered a 13 play, 79-yard drive taking 5:03 off the clock with their ground game. Nate Landman was disqualified from the game for a targeting penalty earlier in the drive. 14-7 ASU. 5:45 left. Kick is returned by Nixon to the CU 16.
- TOUCHDOWN Colorado. With 24 seconds left in the half, Shenault scores his second touchdown of the afternoon on a three-yard route to the inside for the score. Colorado creates a time-consuming 13 play, 84-yard drive of their own that lasted 5:15. Montez again connected with MacIntyre for a big gain, this time a 27-yard completion to get into ASU territory. Shenault made a crucial run from the wildcat formation on 4th and 1 to give the Buffs a scoring chance. Game tied at 14. Kick goes through the end zone for a touchback. Wilkins for ASU kneels to end the half.
- END OF HALF. Montez is 15-20 for 164 yards through the air with a touchdown. Benjamin for ASU has 96 rushing yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns.
Third Quarter:
- Kick from Davis Price goes through the end zone, touchback. ASU starts at the 25.
- TOUCHDOWN Arizona State. Wilkins throws an exceptional ball into the hands of Frank Darby from 40 yards out for the score. Drive took only four plays and 75 yards. The Sun Devils quickly begin the second half on a high note as Benjamin helped them get into scoring position with couple of nice gains on the ground. 21-14 ASU, 13:35 left. ASU kick goes through the end zone, touchback. CU starts at the 25.
- TOUCHDOWN Colorado. Shenault beats his defensive back with ease as Montez was able to connect with Shenault from 30 yards out. Shenault surpasses 100 receiving yards once again and it's his second receiving touchdown for the evening. First play of the five play, 75-yard drive that lasted only 1:49, was a gain of 25 to Shenault which got the Buffs to midfield. Game tied at 21, 11:46 left. Price's kick goes through the end zone, touchback.
- After a completion of 13 yards on the first play of ASU's drive, the Buffs made three straight stops to force the Sun Devils to punt. The Buffs allowed Benjamin to only gain two yards rushing and forcing and incompletion on third down with great zone coverage. 9:49 left. CU ball at its own 20.
- Colorado goes three-and-out for the first time this afternoon. Montez tried to scramble on 3rd and 5 but came up a few of yards short. 8:28 left. Sun Devils ball at their own 40.
- Arizona State goes three-and-out following CU's three-and-out the previous drive. The Buffs once again contained Benjamin to a couple yards and Wilkins came up two yards short of the first down marker on third down. 6:24 left. Punt is downed at the CU 4.
- The Buffs couldn't generate anything from their own four-yard line and went three-and-out for the second straight time. Punt is fair caught at the ASU 43. 4:45 left.
- Colorado forces ASU to go three-and-out in back to back possessions. Wilkins scrambled on 3rd and 2 but came up a yard short. ASU punts it into the end zone for a touchback. 3:13 left.
- TOUCHDOWN Colorado. It's another rushing touchdown for Shenault from a yard out in the wildcat formation, his second rushing touchdown this evening. K.D. Nixon comes up with some big catches for large gains during the drive, the first being a 24-yard completion to get near midfield and the second a 51-yard completion to get to the one-yard line. It's a seven play, 80-yard drive that lasted 2:31. CU takes a 28-21 lead. 42 seconds left. Price's kick goes through the end zone.
- END OF THE THIRD QUARTER.
Fourth Quarter:
- The Buffs come up big on defense in their own red zone and Delrick Abrams Jr. made a crucial pass breakup on 4th down to get the ball back at the CU 3. Before the breakup on 4th down, the Sun Devils got into the red zone via a 72-yard completion from Wilkins to Darby. 13:25 left.
- The Buffs are forced to punt after a drive that consisted of a many rushes from both Montez and Travon McMillian. The Buffs got near midfield and on third down, Montez was able to rush for a first down, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. Davis' punt is returned to the ASU 30. 8:01 left.
- Colorado forces the Sun Devils to go three-and-out for the third time tonight. Carson Wells was able to get pressure to Wilkins on third down and Wilkins' pass fell incomplete. Ronnie Blackmon returns the punt to the CU 24. 7:10 left.
- The Buffaloes come up huge in the last drive of the game. Two key throws from Montez to Shenault on two third downs gave the Buffs an opportunity to run down the clock. The drive took all 7:10 off the clock. Colorado wins it 28-21 and the Buffs move to 5-0 on the season.
