Buffs Fall in Regular Season Finale
November 02, 2018 | Soccer
Colorado awaits Monday's NCAA selection show
BOULDER—The University of Colorado soccer's Senior Day celebration was spoiled at the hands of the visiting Utah Utes on Friday. The Utes early first-half goal held up for the game's entirety, handing the No. 21 Buffaloes a 1-0 loss to close out the regular season.
Colorado (13-4-3, 5-4-2 Pac-12) NCAA Tournament hopes will come down to Monday's NCAA Selection. A bid to the 64-team tournament would mark the team's third consecutive postseason trip. Utah (9-8-2, 6-4-1 Pac-12) jumps ahead of Colorado in the final Pac-12 standings, moving up into fourth.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs played with emotion early on, following the pregame Senior Day celebration.Â
Colorado got earned two corner kicks in the first two minutes of play. Erin Greening almost got the Buffs on the board in the 2nd minute, ringing the ball off the far post on her second corner attempt. Minutes later it was Jorian Baucom on the doorstep. Emily Groark played a one-touch pass, setting up Baucom from 10 yards out.
Utah's first shot on goal did not come until the 11th minute. Mykayla Christensen put the ball in on a charging Jalen Tompkins. Tompkins made the initial save, colliding with Christensen. The contact left the net unprotected and the rebound was put in by Hailey Stodden.
CU finished the first half, outshooting the Utes 10-6. Utah's Carly Nelson made four saves in the half. Utah totaled just three shots on goal in the half, with Tompkins making two saves.Â
Colorado had a number of opportunities in the second half. Taylor Kornieck and Baucom were swarming around the net. Kornieck had a chance in early in the second half, directing a strong header on net. Megan Massey helped set up Baucom in the 65th minute. She sprung Baucom loose inside the box and she put the ball off the side of the net.Â
Controversy struck in the 68th minute after Groark was pulled down by a Utah defender on an almost certain breakaway. The officials let play continue and Utah regained possession.Â
Colorado put nine more shots towards the net in the second half, finishing the afternoon with 19. They were unable to solve Nelson, who made 10 saves on the day.Â
Â
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado's 10 shots on goal were the second most in a Pac-12 game this season. CU twice totaled 11 shots on goal against Oregon and Oregon State.

UP NEXT: The Buffs will learn their fate on Monday, looking for their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Â Â
NOTES: It's the first time Colorado has lost four straight games since 2015…the Buffs have been outscored 11-1 in the losing streak…it was the final Pac-12 home game for Scout Watson, Nancy Best, Isobel Dalton, Sarah Kinzner along with Baucom, Massey and Greening.
QUOTABLE:Â
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On overall thoughts
"I thought we started really well. We were playing on the front-foot and creating chances. I was disappointed with the goal that we gave up, but we still had 80 minutes left in the game. We had plenty of opportunities we just were not sharp enough in the final third. I thought we played hard and left it all on the field. There is no doubt about that. Utah has been on a roll and it was just kind of their day. We had a bulk of the chances, but we did not test their keeper enough. At the end of the day, that was probably our downfall."Â
On the group of seven seniors
"I thought they left it all on the field. Erin [Greening] was getting forward. I thought Sarah [Kinzner] was fantastic as well. Unfortunately, we were not able to get all seven in the game and that is a bit disappointing. As I said, it just was not our day. Credit to Utah. They have been playing really well and they get another result on the road in the Pac-12, which is really hard to do. There is no shame in losing to this team. We just have to regroup and get ready for Monday"
On Monday's selection show
"I felt we controlled our destiny coming into today. Now we do not. I think our resume is very strong and we have a lot of great results. We will see how it falls."
