Jones Named A Finalist for The Honda Award for Cross Country

BOULDER —Over a week has passed since University of Colorado senior Dani Jones won the 2018 NCAA individual cross country championships, and honors are still coming in as she was just named a finalist for the Honda Award for Cross Country.

The Phoenix, Ariz. native, won the NCAA individual cross country crown on November 17 and helped the CU women's team to the NCAA team title for the first time in 14 years. Jones, who recorded her second straight Pac-12 individual cross country championships in October, out-kicked Weini Kelati (New Mexico) down the final stretch to win the NCAA title. Jones crossed the finish in 19:42.8, while Kelati recorded a time of 19:45.3 for second place.

After the NCAA victory, Jones was named the USATF Athlete of the Week and the USTFCCCA Female Athlete of the Year. She was also tabbed an All-American for the third consecutive year.

As a team, CU defeated New Mexico 65-103, posting the third lowest score since the race changed from 5K to 6K in 2001. CU put all five scorers in the top 25, including three in the top 15.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) for the past 43 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2019 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 24, 2019, in downtown Los, Angeles.

The nominees were chosen from the top four finishes at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Honda Sport award winner for cross country will be announced this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.Â

There are three other finalists for the award are Jessica Hull (Oregon), Kelati and Alicia Monson (Wisconsin).
