November 30, 2018 | Women's Basketball
The CU senior is one of 30 to be selected
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—Colorado senior Kennedy Leonard is one of 30 women's basketball student-athletes selected as a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award on Friday.Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Leonard has been one of the best to wear the Black and Gold. Her name is littered across the CU record books and she continues to climb up the charts. Leonard is CU's all-time leader in career assists average (5.7). She is 41 assists away from becoming Colorado's career-assist leader, currently with 572. Leonard is also 12th in scoring with 1,489 career points.Â
Off the court, Leonard has been a leader on campus and in the community. She has helped establish the Boulder Buffs, a student-athlete mental health awareness and support group. She also volunteers at local food pantries, the Children's Hospital and with programs like Read With the Buffs and 6 Stones in her home state of Texas.
Leonard has been a key piece in Colorado's 6-0 start to the season. She third in the NCAA with 7.2 assists per game this season. Leonard also ranks 25th in the nation with 3.3 steals per game, while Her 17.7 points per game lead the Buffs.Â
From the list of 30 candidates, a committee will select 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award in February. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring. For more information on each of the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
