Two With West Coast Ties Set To Join CU Next Fall
BOULDER —University of Colorado men's golf coach Roy Edwards has landed two of the state of Colorado's top prep players to his program, as both signed national letters-of-intent with the Buffaloes in the recent fall signing period.
Jack Hughes from Aspen High School and Canon Olkowski from Faith Lutheran High School in the Las Vegas suburbs by way of Grand Junction High School, both signed to attend CU beginning in the 2019 fall semester.
"We are very excited about Jack and Canon," Edwards said. "They are two top players from the state. We expect them to work very hard, be great teammates, believe in themselves, and compete to win Pac-12 and NCAA Championships. They both are fundamentally strong and have some very good golf ahead of them."
Hughes had a solid summer in amateur play, topped by reaching the semifinals of the Colorado Golf Association's Junior Match Play Championship; he was the eighth seed after firing a 1-under 71 in qualifying and won three matches to get to the semis. He finished seventh in the CGA Junior Amateur with a 70-71-73—214 scorecard (2-under par at Thornton's Todd Creek Golf Club) and placed 10th in the AJGA Hale Irwin (74-73-72—219).
He lettered three years in golf at Aspen, his senior year (when he averaged 70.25 strokes per round), and his sophomore and freshman years. When he was a junior, he attended the Bishop Gates Golf Academy in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where his top finish in competition was in the Faldo Series Florida Championship; his 4-under par 69-71—140 performance earned him runner-up honors (he was the first round leader).
Hughes was also the runner-up in the state's 3A Championship, turning in a 2-over 72-70—142 effort at Boulder Country Club, which had him three shots out of the lead. He helped Aspen to its first-ever state crown in boy's golf. He tied for 25th as a sophomore when AHS placed fifth, and tied for 22nd as a freshman with his team placing third.
"I wanted to attend CU because I wanted an environment of hard working players and coaches who all share the same goal of succeeding," Hughes said. "Also, having my twin brother attend CU also had a big impact on my decision."
Edwards on Hughes: "Jack is a guy we feel has huge potential. He has very good fundamentals and as he continues to grow and work hard we feel he could be very good."
Olkowski, the younger brother (two years) of current CU sophomore Trevor, won the Las Vegas Junior City Amateur in September by one stroke in posting a 5-under scorecard of 70-69—139. Then in October, he placed sixth in the Las Vegas City Amateur with an 8-under, 69-67—136 effort.
Before his family moved to Summerlin, a suburb west of Las Vegas, he lettered three times at Grand Junction High School, where he was a two-time All-State performer. As a junior, he finished third in the Colorado 5A state championship with an even-par 70-72—142 score, three shots out of the lead, and was 13th as a sophomore with a 6-over 77-71—148 tally (he was 31st as a freshman).
Nevada's boy's golf schedule differs from that of Colorado's, as his senior year of high school play will commence in the spring.
"I chose CU Boulder because I really like the facilities, the campus and the coaches," Olkowski said.
Edwards on Olkowski: "Canon is a guy we identified early in the process as a player with great potential. He is a very good athlete. He is a good student. He comes from a family of high-achievers and we expect nothing but the best from Canon. We are very excited to have Canon officially join us."
The Buffaloes recently completed the fall portion of their 2018-19 schedule, winning two tournaments in September (the Air Force Miranda and their own Mark Simpson-CU invitationals) and are currently ranked No. 73 in the nation by GolfStat and No. 81 by Golfweek (299 schools compete in the sport in Division I). CU has one senior on its roster, as Wilson Belk is on schedule to graduate next spring.
