Painton's 4-under 68 Paces Buffs In Spring Opener
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule here Thursday, ending the day in a 10th-place tie after the first round of Hawai'i-Hilo's 27th annual Amer Ari Invitational.
No. 16 Texas is atop the leaderboard after 18 holes, as the Longhorns posted a 9-under 279 team score, good for a one stroke lead over No. 1 Oklahoma State (280). Just two shots back at 281 are No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 40 TCU.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 54, are tied for 10th with Pac-12 rival and No. 41 Oregon, as both recorded 1-under par 287 scores on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King's Course layout. Overall, seven top 20 and 10 top 50 teams are competing in the tournament.
Colorado opened the spring season for the second straight year with a subpar team score, and the ninth time in its history – all since 2000.
Senior Spencer Painton is tied for second in the medalist race after carding a 4-under 68, just two shots out of the lead. He had five birdies, eighth-most in the 114-man field, to go with 12 pars and a single bogey, which unfortunately came on his final hole of the day. It was his team-leading fifth round in the 60s this season, his seventh under par.
Senior Yannik Paul turned in a 1-under 71 as he opened his last semester as a Buffalo with a steady round that featured 16 pars – tied for the most in the field – with one eagle and one bogey, which he started his round with. He recorded 14 straight pars after that point, and scored one of the day's 21 eagles with four holes to play. He's tied for 27th in the standings.
Senior John Souza fashioned a 2-over 74 to stand tied for 65th, as a triple bogey late in his round (third to last hole) sidetracked him a bit after he spent most of his round under or at par. He otherwise had four birdies, 10 pars and three bogeys.
Freshman Trevor Olkowski also shot a 74, doing so with two birdies and 12 pars while recording four bogeys. He was 2-over after four holes before scoring nine straight pars and then back-to-back birdies that got him back to even; but he'd bogey two of his final three holes to slip back to a couple over par.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin rounded out the CU scorers, as he shot a 3-over 75, his highest score in 13 rounds as a Buff after he transferred in from McNeese State last summer. He had four birdies and eight pars against five bogeys and a double, the latter of which he scored on his first hole of the day (the par-3 No. 7). He birdied three of his next six holes to get to 1-under but would go on to bogey four of his last five holes (two on either side of his last birdie) to finish things off.
Sophomore Victor Bjorlow is playing here as an individual (his score does not count toward the team total), and he opened with a 1-over 73 that has him tied for 47th. He had four birdies and 10 pars against three bogeys and a double. Among the 24 players competing as individuals, he's tied for sixth in that mini-tournament within a tournament.
"We definitely had some good and some not-so-good today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Spencer had a really nice round, he was on top of his game all day. Yannik did a really nice job of hanging there during his round and posting a nice number. I was a little disappointed in how we finished – we were a little sloppy at the end. I'm looking forward to us improving in that area the next two rounds."
The Buffs were hanging around 5-under par with three holes left by their designated scorers, but had four bogeys and a double down the stretch. Paul's eagle on the par-5 No. 4 lessened the impact and helped CU remain under par.
"We're in a good spot, the rust is off, and there's a lot of golf left," Edwards added. "We just need to keep being disciplined in our course management and executing the right shots. Everybody was really competitive today, which was good."
Georgia Tech's Tyler Strafaci is the individual leader with a 6-under 66, which leads five players, including CU's Painton, by two strokes. Sixteen players shot in the 60s in the first round, with 37 breaking par.
Colorado will be paired with Pac-12 rivals Oregon and Stanford and for the second straight day with Auburn in Friday's second round, which gets underway with a 10:30 a.m. (MST) shotgun start. The third and final round is scheduled Saturday.
