Wright, Jank Earn UCHealth CU Athlete the Week
February 08, 2018 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Preparing for their first taste of college final exams didn't stop Annika Jank and McKinley Wright IV from dominating on the hardwood; the duo of freshmen from Minnesota have been (retroactively) awarded UCHealth CU Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 11-17.
Freshman McKinley Wright IV averaged 21 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals a game as the Buffs battled to a 1-1 record over the week. While he had one of his quietest games of the year in a loss to San Diego on Tuesday, Wright bounced back to enjoy a career night in Friday's win over South Dakota State. The freshman point guard got his teammates involved early, dishing out seven of his 11 assists in the first half. Wright took control after the halftime break, scoring 23 points in the second half and overtime to lift CU to victory. On the game, Wright tallied 30 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds, two steals and a block, all while only committing one personal foul in 40 minutes on the floor.
On the women's side, freshman Annika Jank averaged 21 points, nine rebounds and a block as CU split a pair of games against Dartmouth and Air Force. In a loss to Dartmouth on Monday, Jank recorded a career-high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds. Then in Friday's win over Air Force, Jank posted her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting, and grabbing 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. CU held a narrow 30-28 halftime advantage, but Jank's nine second half points were key to the Buffs second half dominance and 25-point victory.
