Buffaloes Sixth In Stroke Play, Drop Match Play Round To Iowa State

March 26, 2018 | Women's Golf

RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. – Colorado finished sixth in stroke play and then dropped a match play decision to Iowa State in the first day of the San Diego State March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Club on Monday.

The No. 18 ranked Buffaloes shot an 11-over 299 in the stroke play round to earn the No. 6 seed in the match play championship bracket to face No. 3 seed Iowa State. The Cyclones then took a 4-1 decision over the Buffaloes in match play. Colorado will face host San Diego State in the consolation bracket Tuesday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. MT.

USC won the stroke play round going away with a 6-under 282, 15 strokes ahead of second place Texas. Colorado was only two shots off the Longhorns who finished at 9-over. Iowa State, Northwestern and UCLA tied for third at 10-over, with the Cyclones winning the tiebreak for the third seed to draw the Buffaloes in the match play round.

USC's Allisen Corpuz took medalist honors, shooting the lone 60's round of the day finishing with a 4-under 68, two strokes better than UCLA's Mariel Galdiano.

Senior Brittany Fan logged Colorado's top round during stroke play with a 1-over par 73, tying for 13th overall. Fan rode the rollercoaster early. After starting off with a birdie on No. 6, she fell back with double-bogey, bogey, on the next two before rebounding with another birdie on par-4 No. 9. She was 2-over on the back, before rallying with three-straight birdies down the stretch.

Sophomore Robyn Choi finished one stroke behind Fan, carding a 2-over 74, tying for 15th overall. Starting the day at No. 5, Choi was even through her first 14 holes, trading a pair of bogeys with birdies on the par-4 No. 10 and par-4 No. 13. The opening holes of the course weren't as kind though. Choi bogeyed three of her last four, although she picked a stroke back up with a birdie on the par-5 No. 3.

Junior Gillian Vance and sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins tied for 30th overall shooting a 4-over 76. Vance started at No. 8 and played her first nine holes at 1-over before running into a bump heading into the clubhouse with a pair of 6's to drop to 4-over. She played even through her final seven, picking up a birdie on the par-4 No. 6, her next-to-last hole.

Hodgkins started at No. 7, falling to 2-over right away, but quickly bounced back to even over the next five holes with birdies at the par-5 No. 9 and par-4 No. 13. She had a struggle similar to Vance on the back end of the course, playing the last three holes at 4-over. Hodgkins rallied with a birdie on the par-3 No. 2 and hit par on four of her final six holes

Freshman Elle Otten tied for 44th with an 8-over 80 in stroke play. She logged par on six of the nine holes on the back nine, playing that portion at four over. Otten's front nine was highlighted with her lone birdie of the day, on the par-3 No. 2.

Fan was Colorado's lone highlight in match play defeating Chayanit Wangmahaporn, 2 up.

"We played the stroke round pretty well and consistent," head coach Anne Kelly said. "This is a top quality field and a very good golf course. Unfortunately, we came out very flat for the match play – we just couldn't get anything going at all. Elle in her first match play event was 3 up early, but let the win slip away. It was a good experience for her. Brittany played well and was really our only bright spot this afternoon."
