Golfers Tie For Sixth In Stanford's "The Goodwin"

O'Loughlin Leads Buffaloes With 10th Place Effort
SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team finished the day where it started, but that wasn't a bad thing as the Buffaloes tied for sixth as Stanford's 49th Annual "The Goodwin" came to a close here Saturday.
No. 6 Oklahoma rode a tournament-best second round to the team title, as the Sooners finished with a 24-under par 828 team score, good enough to outdistance Bay area entrants, No. 5 California (831) and host and No. 20 Stanford (836). Those were the only schools to post sub-280 scores in the final round, perhaps no coincidence they were more familiar with the area weather conditions.
"It was about 20 degrees cooler today than for the first two rounds, some wind and even some fog. It was really more of a traditional San Francisco day weather-wise," CU head coach Roy Edwards noted. "The guys weren't shaken by it and responded well."
No. 31 Oregon claimed fourth with a 12-under 842 score, while No. 24 UNLV held off the Buffaloes for the last spot in the top five (849). Colorado, ranked 46th, finished up with a 4-over 288 Saturday for a 1-over 853 total, with No. 43 Northwestern able to catch the Buffs and tie them for sixth.
Colorado hung around even for most of the final round, getting it to 3-under at one point and was still even prior to the last hole of the day, but three bogeys kept the Buffs from claiming sixth on their own. Small consolation was the fact that the No. 18 holes played the toughest in the tournament; it played at +0.46 to par and had 146 scores worse than par. The Buff scorers played it better than most even with the last day, scoring seven pars and five bogeys.
CU should move up in the rankings, as this event had one of the deepest fields of the year (six top 25 and 11 top 50 teams were among the 25 schools that competed. The Buffs only were bested by five teams ahead of them (four in the top 25) and defeated four ranked teams and tied another.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin tied for 10th with a 4-under 209 score, wrapping things up with a 1-under 70 on the 7,169-yard, par-72 TPC Harding Park Golf Club layout. That followed his career-best second round 66 which propelled him into the top 10; he had the sixth-most birdies this week (13) and played the tough par-4 holes at 3-under, tied for seventh in the 135-man field.
It was O'Loughlin's third top 10 and fifth in the top 20 finish, both tied for the team lead. He also had 32 pars with his other nine holes all bogeys, as he was one of three Buffs to avoid a score higher than a boge.
Senior Yannik Paul finished with a 1-under 70, giving him a 1-under 212 score that tied him for 20th. He had a very steady tournament, with eight birdies and 39 pars against seven bogeys. The pars were the eighth-most here, where he also tied for playing the third-best on the par-3s at 3-under.
Freshman Trevor Olkowski couldn't match his career-best 66 that he fashioned in the second round, closing with a 5-over 76 that left him at even-par (213) for the tournament; that tied him for 27th, his second-best finish in a 54-hole collegiate event. The fives were wild for him: he tied for fifth in the field on the par-5 holes, playing them at 5-under overall.
Senior Spencer Painton couldn't get many putts to fall this week, ending with a 74 for a 10-over 223, tying for 92nd. He had just two birdies on the TPC track, one each in the first and final rounds, but was the "par-machine" he has shown a flash for, as he had 40 over the three rounds, fifth-most.
Senior John Souza rounded out the CU contingent and closed with a second straight 3-over 74 for a 12-over 225, tied for 101st in the standings. He has three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys for the second straight day.
"Overall this was a good event," Edwards said. "In addition to the change in the weather conditions, there were much tougher hole locations for the final round, yet we still had a lot of good things happen."
CU went a second straight round with no score worse than a bogey, a testament as Edwards has pointed out to the team's course management skills.
"Daniel has been playing really well and has now had two really nice efforts in a row," he said. "It's not a surprise at all, his game has been looking good all spring and it was just a matter of time. Trevor took a huge step forward this week, and Yannik may not have caught fire, but was once again very consistent. That's what he's been all year; this is the best I've ever seen him play and I believe he is on the verge of some great golf."
Oregon's Norman Xiong claimed medalist honors, pulling away from the field late in the second round and wound up winning by six shots; he finished with a 68 for a 15-under 198 total. Stanford's Jeffrey Swegle carded a 70 for 9-under 204 score to claim runner-up honors. He had opened with a 63 to own the day 1 lead but Xiong caught and passed after a second 65 in a row Friday.
"As we keep getting better, we really need to keep working on our short games," Edwards added. "That's going to be the difference for us as we head down the stretch this season."
The Buffaloes have one tournament left ahead of next month's Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles. CU's final tune-up will be in the Arizona State Thunderbird Classic in Tempe on April 14-15.
NOTES: The average score was in fact almost a stroke higher in the final round – 73.56 – it was 73.16 for the first 18, 72.98 for the second round and 73.18 overall for 405 rounds here … Paul had his 19th career tournament at or under par (actually all under) in 44 events; he is second only to his older twin, Jeremy, who had 22 in his CU career … Paul now has six tournaments this year under par; the school record is seven, first set by brother Jeremy in 2015-16 which he matched last year … By ending in a tie for 20th, it was his 21st Top 20 finish, tying Rick Cramer for eighth place on CU's all-time list … CU was joined by the top three finishers here – Oklahoma, Cal and Stanford – as the only schools with three finishers in the top 30.
