Paul, Kiernan Collect UCHealth CU Athlete of the Week Honors
April 18, 2018 | Men's Golf, Track and Field, Women's Golf, Lacrosse
Yannik Paul (men's golf) and Darby Kiernan (lacrosse) have been named this week's UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week after their record-setting performances last weekend.Â
Â
Paul, a senior from Viernheim, Germany, turned in one of the most impressive 54-hole scores in school history at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational, carding a 67-66-69 – 202 to earn the first major tournament win of his collegiate career (sharing the win with UNLV's Shintaro Ban). His 202 score was the best in CU history in a 54-hole tournament on a par-71 course, and the second-best on any course. Paul becomes the Buffs' first medalist in a 54-hole major tournament since his twin brother Jeremy did so in 2016. In the process, he became just the sixth golfer in school history to score in the 60s in all three rounds of a tournament, and tied CU's single-season record with his seventh tournament under par. Over the weekend, Paul made 17 birdies (tied for first in the 85-man field), and 31 pars, while scoring above par on just six holes. Â
Â
Kiernan, a senior from Ridgewood, New Jersey, tallied 12 points in wins over Stanford and Cal last weekend, helping CU clinch at least a share of the Pac-12 regular season title. She led all players with eight draw controls in Friday's 11-10 win over Stanford, and scored two goals, including the Buffs' tenth and final goal in regulation. Then in an 18-11 win over Cal on Sunday, Kiernan enjoyed a career-day, recording a school-record 10 points. She scored seven goals, tying CU's single-game scoring record while only attempting 10 shots. Kiernan also added three assists, becoming CU's career leader assists (67) when she found Sophia Castillo for the game's opening goal.Â
Â
Also nomination for this weeks honors: Brittany Fan (women's golf) and Maja Wichhart-Donzo (track & field).
Â
Senior Brittany Fan led the Buffs at the 2018 Silverado Showdown last week, shooting a 1-over 217 to finish tied for 12thoverall. Her 4-under 68 in the final round was the second lowest round in the field, and was just one stroke over her season-best round. Fan now has 10 top-20 finishes on the season, tied for third in school history.
Â
Junior Maja Wichhart-Donzo collected a pair of first-place finishes at last weekend's Kit Mayer Invitational last weekend. She won the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.41. Then, Wichhart-Donzo leapt to her second first-place finish of the day in the triple jump, recording a new PR 12.49 meters.Â
