Golfers Open In Tie For Seventh At NCAA West Regional

May 14, 2018 | Men's Golf

Painton, Paul Lead Way With 1-under 71s

STOCKTON, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team didn't have a spectacular day here Monday, but regardless the Buffaloes are in the thick of things after the completion of the first round of the NCAA West/Stockton Regional.

Colorado, ranked 42nd in the country, is tied for seventh after posting a 2-over 290 team score, but has two rounds remaining to climb into the top five, as those will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals in two weeks.

Iowa State, ranked 55th in the nation, is the not-so-surprising leader, as the Cyclones posted a 10-under 278 score, three shots up on No. 43 Kansas.  ISU was the Big 12 Conference runner-up and has played well most of the spring.  No. 7 Alabama holds third (282), followed by No. 31 TCU (283) and No. 5 Stanford (285) to round out the top five.  No. 30 Oregon holds sixth (289), while UC Irvine, the only school to have played the golf course utilized for the regional this year, is tied with CU.

"I'm actually really pleased with our score," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Just to look it, it appeared we were playing fairly poorly, but as it turned out, we're right in the middle of things.  It was a good job by the guys of competing and hanging in there when not playing our best.

"The golf course played fairly difficult today," he added.  "It was downright cold this morning, high 50s with a lot of wind, blowing up near 14-18 miles per hour consistently.  But we're used that and it didn't have anything to do with our score."

What was a factor was that all but one of the teams ahead of the Buffaloes had at least one if not two players score in the 60s; the fourth- and fifth-man scoring averages were 74.5 and 76.7, respectively.  CU had 75s from both Monday, bested by just the top four teams by the fourth and final scorer, while only one school (Kansas) had their final player shoot under a 75, and that was a 74.

Seniors Spencer Painton and Yannik Paul led the Colorado attack on the 7,239-yard, par-72 Reserve at Spanos Park course design, as both recorded 1-under 71s.  Both arrived at that number in different manners, however, that has the duo tied for 19th.

Painton, CU's leader in pars, started out with nine straight before birdying Nos. 10 and 11.  After a par on 12, he went bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey before finishing with a par.  He has played the par-4s at 1-under, tied for ninth-best among the field.

Paul moved to 2-under through six after birdies on Nos. 3 and 6, but bogeys on Nos. 7, 9 and 10 pushed him to 1-over.  He then birdied 11 to get back to even before an uncharacteristic double on No. 12, just his fourth hole worse than bogey in 576 holes this season.  He then rallied to birdie three of his last six holes, ending the day with a team-high six birdies, which also were tied for the third-most in the 75-man field.  He has played the par-3s at 1-under, tied for best in the field, and is tied for third on the par-5s, playing those collectively Monday at 3-under.

He did break his own school record with his ninth straight subpar round, though another record run of seven straight in the 60s came to an end; he had tied that mark.  And he officially became the seventh Buffalo to play in four NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 37th after fashioning a 1-over 73, as he scored four birdies and nine pars against five bogeys.  He was 2-over after five and then scored back-to-back birdies to get back down to even, but was 2-over again after 10.  He scored his other two birdies over his last eight holes with a single bogey to close his round.

Sophomore Ross Macdonald and senior John Souza are tied for 52nd after recording 3-over par 75s.  They, too, arrived at those numbers in completely different routes.

Macdonald scored a 40 on the front nine, mustering five pars and four bogeys, and then was 5-over after a bogey on No. 10; he then birdied Nos. 11 and 12 but undid those with a double bogey on No. 13.  He then regrouped and closed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 with the rest being pars.

Souza, after opening with a par, went double-bogey-bogey to stand 4-over through four; a birdie on No. 6 earned one stroke back, and he eventually got back to even with birdies on No. 10, 15 and 16.  But he finished his day with a double and a bogey to rise back to 3-over.

All five Buffaloes scored at least four birdies, something no other team can lay claim to, and their 22 overall leads the field.   However, their 45 pars were the second-fewest.

"We had a couple of guys get off rough starts, but they hung in there.  That's why I'm pleased," Edwards said.  "One good round tomorrow and we'll be right inside there.   We just need to fix some mistakes we made today, and if this turns out to be our worst round, then 2-over is really good."

There is a three-way tie for the individual lead, as Ryan Han (UC Davis), Daniel Sutton (Kansas) and Brandon Wu (Stanford) all recorded 5-under par 67s.  Twelve players shot in the 60s and 26 overall were under par for the first round.

The second round will commence at 8:30 a.m. mountain time on Tuesday.  The Buffaloes will tee off in the second wave beginning at 9:25 a.m. off the first tee, and will be paired with UC Irvine and Kennesaw State.  The third and final round is set for Wednesday at similar tee times.

NOTES: Colorado is trying to return to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 2002 … This was the 25th round in regionals in the Edwards Era at CU (12 seasons); Monday's 2-over 290 was the fourth-best (behind a 277, 279 and 288) … The average score for the 75 individual rounds Monday was 72.83 … Colorado has played the par-5 holes at 8-under (tied for second-best), the par-3s at 6-over (tied for seventh) and the par-4s at 7-over (ninth) … Freshman Trevor Olkowski is the alternate here for the Buffaloes, as this is the first year the NCAA is allowing substitutes at regional competitions; Edwards said he would only activate him in the case of illness or injury.
