BOULDER — Colorado's golf teams have revealed a new team-specific logo that will add a special identity to the Buffs.
The logo features mascot Chip the Buffalo swinging an iron in a balanced finish, and was unveiled Monday at Boulder Country Club.
"We are excited to introduce everyone to our team-specific secondary logo with Chip, our iconic animated mascot," CU men's coach Roy Edwards said. "It gives our team a specific personality and we expect it to be a lot of fun for our team and fans."
"We are thrilled about the new golf Chip logo," said CU women's golf head coach Anne Kelly. "It is a mark uniquely for CU golf and one that will be embraced by the golf team members and fans. I think Chip's expression displays a competitive determination — just how we want our golfers to be on the golf course."
This unique style of logo with mascots is featured in other golf programs across the country, including Oklahoma State's Pistol Pete and UNLV's Hey Reb.
"I had an opportunity to travel with the women to a tournament in Dallas and had noticed that golf-specific marks were very popular in our industry," said CU Associate AD for Trademark Licensing & Brand Development J.T. Galloway. "I saw some other teams that had executed it and thought, 'We haven't done anything like that here and we should really start to look at that.'"
The logo was designed by an outside agency through IMG's creative services department. Various poses of Chip were pitched before settling on the finishing pose.
"We hope to have this to market probably in the next two weeks," Galloway said. "That was our goal. We wanted to announce that date in conjunction with our official online store through Fanatics."
CU men's assistant coach Patrick Grady, a former Buffs standout, found the logo as "pure swag." Grady also mentioned that the younger members of the team love it.
"We had our first team meeting yesterday and probably half of the team was wearing the hats the previous day we had given them," Galloway mentioned. "We're getting hit up through our Instagram and Twitter accounts right now from fans, alumni wanting to know where they can buy the product and when it's going to be available. The reception's been unanimously positive."
The men's team will begin their season Sept. 7 when they travel to Colorado Springs for the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational while the women will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Dick McGuire Invitational starting Sept. 10.
