Barton, Watson Lead Buffs to Victory

Colorado tops UTSA, 4-0

BOULDER—Senior Scout Watson recorded her first career solo shutout on Friday, helping Colorado blank the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-0. The shutout continues the Buffaloes' streak, holding the opposition scoreless for the consecutive game to open the season.

Junior Tatum Barton led the offense for the second consecutive game. She followed up her hat-trick performance against Missouri with another two goals on Friday. Senior Jorian Baucom registered her second goal as a Buff and a late own goal rounded out the scoring.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
UTSA recorded the first scoring opportunity of the evening, testing Watson in the 4th minute. Ellis Patterson fired the first shot of the day off the crossbar and followed up with a rebound attempt straight into arms of Watson.

The Buffs countered with their first opportunity in the 7th minute. Colorado's Taylor Kornieck set a ball into a streaking Baucom atop the box. Baucom shot the ball in on UTSA keeper Michelle Cole and the rebound slipped out in front of the net. Barton and a UTSA defended met the ball at the same time, resulting in a stalemate.

It did not take long for Barton to make good on her next opportunity. She got the board in the 17th minute with help from Kornieck and Emily Groark. Groark crossed the ball to the middle from outside the six-yard box, finding Barton for the game's first tally.

The Buffaloes outshot UTSA 4-1 the rest of the half.

Colorado continued to push on offense in the second, resulting in early opportunities. CU had three corner kicks in the first eleven minutes of the half. Kornieck came close to converting on a corner opportunity sending a header just high over the net in the 55th minute.

The early pressure from the Buffs paid off in the 58th minute when Barton headed the chip in from Baucom past Cole for the 2-0 lead.

Colorado extended the lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute. Katie Joella picked up her first assist of the season, feeding Baucom at the top of the box. Baucom placed her shot inside the left post and past the diving keeper for the score. Colorado got the benefit of an own goal in the 87th minute to close out the victory.

KEY STATISTICS: 0. The Colorado defense continued its stellar play in front of the net. The Buffs allowed just seven shots all game. Watson was forced to make just two saves, both coming in the first half. UTSA was held one shot in the second half and struggled to find any kind of rhythm.

UP NEXT: Colorado will host former Big 12 rival Iowa State, at Prentup Field, on Sunday at 12 p.m. Sunday's game is the annual Touch-A-Truck game with first-responder vehicles on-hand for fans to explore prior to kickoff. It is also a Wear White game.

Notes: Watson earned her first career solo shutout, having had 11 career combined shutouts…Barton matches Nikki Marshal for most goals over a two-game stretch (5). Marshall had five combined goals Sept. 1 and Sept 3 vs. Clemson and Mississippi in 2006…Colorado's shutout streak is tied for fourth-longest in program history. The Buffaloes have had three previous four-game streaks...Kornieck notched another assist on Friday, placing her 8th in program history with 13 career helpers. She has a career-best six assists on the season.

QUOTABLE:

Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On overall performance
"It was a dangerous match for us. I thought we brought good energy. We had a good early goal from Tatum [Barton]. We were happy with the 1-0 lead, but we knew that was dangerous. I was really pleased with our second half. I thought we created a lot more opportunities. The second goal by Tatum was good. The third goal from Katie [Joella] to Jorian [Baucom] was well played. The last goal was a little unfortunate for UTSA, but we were putting some pressure on, so I think it was coming. At the end of the day, a 4-0 win at home against a solid, well-coached team is good to keep the momentum going into Sunday against Iowa State."

On the play of Watson and the defense
"I thought Scout [Watson] dealt with everything. She made the early save which she pushed off the crossbar. We could have been down 1-0 in the first five minutes. I felt after that moment the backend was very good. I thought everybody back there was a solid cohesive unit. It was a good performance, but we know we are going to face some more pressure on Sunday."

On Jorian Baucom and Tatum Barton
"I thought Jorian played hard and deserved to get a goal. So, we are pleased with that. Tatum has put herself in good spots to score goals. Obviously, Taylor [Kornieck] is kind of spearheading everything from a deeper lying spot. It was a good overall performance. We can clean up the midfield a bit, but it was good momentum going into Sunday."
